In short
いちばん before an adjective forms the superlative: いちばん 高い (the highest). To say which group: くだものの 中で、なにが いちばん すきですか (of all fruits, which do you like best?).
- くだものの 中で、りんごが いちばん すきです。kudamono no naka de, ringo ga ichiban suki desuOf all fruits, I like apples best.
- 日本で いちばん 高い 山は ふじさんです。nihon de ichiban takai yama wa fujisan desuThe highest mountain in Japan is Mount Fuji.
- かぞくで だれが いちばん せが 高いですか。kazoku de dare ga ichiban se ga takai desu kaWho is the tallest in your family?
The basics
いちばん (number one) before an adjective gives the superlative: “the most”. You name the group with の なかで (among): くだものの なかで りんごが いちばん すきです.
- くだものの なかで りんごが いちばん すきです。kudamono no naka de ringo ga ichiban suki desuOf all fruits, apples are my favourite.
- 日本で いちばん 高い 山は ふじさんです。nihon de ichiban takai yama wa fujisan desuThe highest mountain in Japan is Mount Fuji.
Asking the question
The question word depends on what you're looking for: なに (what), だれ (who), どこ (where), いつ (when), どれ (which one, among objects). It takes が.

Between two items, you use どちら and の ほうが (previous lesson). From three on, いちばん.
Common mistakes
- Using いちばん to compare two things: it's の ほうが.
- Putting は on the question word: なにが いちばん, not なには.
- Forgetting で in “in Japan”: 日本で いちばん…
