The more…, the more…: 〜ば〜ほど

Verb/Adj in ば + same word (dictionary) + ほど

Word in ば + same word (dictionary) + ほど: the more…, the more… (読めば読むほど, 高ければ高いほど, 静かなら静かなほど). Short form: 〜ほど on its own.

In short

〜ば〜ほど expresses proportion: “the more you…, the more…”. You repeat the same word twice: first in the ば conditional, then in the dictionary form followed by ほど (知れば知るほど, 高ければ高いほど). For a な-adjective: 静かなら静かなほど.

  • 練習すればするほど、上手になる。れんしゅうすればするほど、じょうずになる。The more you practise, the better you get.
  • 京都は、知れば知るほどおもしろい町だ。きょうとは、しればしるほどおもしろいまちだ。The more you get to know Kyoto, the more interesting it becomes.
  • 魚は新しければ新しいほどおいしい。さかなはあたらしければあたらしいほどおいしい。The fresher the fish, the better it tastes.
  • 部屋は静かなら静かなほどいい。へやはしずかならしずかなほどいい。For a room, the quieter the better.

The basics

English says “the more…, the more…”. Japanese repeats the same word: the first time in the ば conditional (“if you…”), the second in the dictionary form followed by ほど (“to that extent”). Literally: “if you practise, to the extent you practise, you get better”.

The second half of the sentence says what changes in proportion: you improve, it tastes better, you understand less…

The sentence, piece by piece
練習すればif you practise
するほど、all the more you do it
上手にskilled
なるyou become

The more you practise, the better you get.

  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • adjective
  • このお菓子は、食べれば食べるほど食べたくなる。このおかしは、たべればたべるほどたべたくなる。The more of these sweets you eat, the more you want.
  • 山は、上に行けば行くほど寒くなる。やまは、うえにいけばいくほどさむくなる。In the mountains, the higher you go, the colder it gets.

How to form it

The repeated word is always the same. Only the first occurrence takes ば; the second is in the dictionary form (な for a な-adjective).

TypeConstructionExample
verbV-ば + V (dictionary) + ほど読めば読むほど
するすれば + する + ほど練習すればするほど
い-adjective〜ければ + 〜い + ほど高ければ高いほど
な-adjective〜なら + 〜な + ほど静かなら静かなほど
な-adjective (written)〜であれば + ある + ほど静かであればあるほど
  • この本は、読めば読むほどわからなくなる。このほんは、よめばよむほどわからなくなる。The more I read this book, the less I understand it.
  • 部屋は広ければ広いほどいいわけではない。へやはひろければひろいほどいいわけではない。A room isn't necessarily better just because it's bigger.

The short form: 〜ほど on its own

You can drop the ば part: 考えるほどわからない (“the more I think, the less I understand”). The meaning is the same, the tone slightly more written.

After a noun, ほど can also express a general proportion: 有名な店ほど高い (“the more famous a restaurant, the more expensive it is”).

  • 考えるほど、わからなくなる。かんがえるほど、わからなくなる。The more I think about it, the less I understand.
  • 有名な店ほど、値段が高い。ゆうめいなみせほど、ねだんがたかい。The more famous a restaurant is, the more expensive it is.

ば〜ほど or につれて?

〜につれて (covered later) describes two changes progressing together over time: 年をとるにつれて、体が弱くなる. 〜ば〜ほど rather expresses a general proportion, and can end with a judgement (いい, おいしい): 新しければ新しいほどいい.

FormIdeaExample
〜ば〜ほどproportion, general truth高ければ高いほどいい
〜につれてgradual change over time秋が深まるにつれて、寒くなる

Common mistakes

  • Repeating two different words: “勉強すれば読むほど” makes no sense. It's the same word twice: 読めば読むほど.
  • Using ば twice or forgetting ほど: “読めば読めば”, “読めば読む” are wrong.
  • Forming the な-adjective wrongly: “静かば” doesn't exist; say 静かなら静かなほど.
