The basics
In the past, い-adjectives change themselves: い becomes かった, then you add です. な-adjectives stay as they are, and it's です that goes into the past: でした.
| Past affirmative | Past negative | |
|---|---|---|
| たかい | たかかったです | たかくなかったです |
| いい | よかったです | よくなかったです |
| しずか | しずかでした | しずかじゃありませんでした |
い-adjectives
The past is carried by the adjective: たかかった. です stays in the present, it's only there for politeness. In the negative: くない → くなかった.
- りょこうは たのしかったです。ryokō wa tanoshikatta desuThe trip was great.
- テストは むずかしくなかったです。tesuto wa muzukashiku nakatta desuThe test wasn't difficult.
な-adjectives
Exactly like nouns: でした and じゃありませんでした.
- その ホテルは きれいでした。sono hoteru wa kirei deshitaThat hotel was clean.
Common mistakes
- Saying たかいでした: the past of たかい is たかかったです.
- Saying たかかったでした: one past is enough, です stays in the present.
- Forgetting よ for いい: よかったです, not いかったです.
