Adjectives in the negative
Adj-い → くないです／Adj-な → じゃありません
い-adjective: い → くないです (よくない for いい). な-adjective: じゃありません.
In short
い-adjectives: you replace い with くない. たかい → たかくないです (it's not expensive). Exception: いい becomes よくないです. な-adjectives: like nouns, じゃありません. しずかじゃありません (it's not quiet).
- この 本は 高くないです。kono hon wa takaku nai desuThis book isn't expensive.
- 今日は よくないです。kyō wa yoku nai desuToday's no good.
- この まちは しずかじゃありません。kono machi wa shizuka ja arimasenThis town isn't quiet.
The basics
Each of the two families of adjectives has its own negative. For い-adjectives, you replace the final い with くない. For な-adjectives, you do the same as with a noun: じゃありません.

い-adjectives: くないです
くないです is the everyday form. くありません also exists, a little more formal: たかくありません.
- この かばんは たかくないです。kono kaban wa takaku nai desuThis bag isn't expensive.
- きょうは さむくないです。kyō wa samuku nai desuIt isn't cold today.
The exception いい
いい (good, fine) comes from the older よい: all its forms are built on よ. Its negative is よくないです, never いくない.
- てんきが よくないです。tenki ga yoku nai desuThe weather isn't nice.
な-adjectives: じゃありません
Just like a noun. じゃないです and ではありません also exist, with the same differences in register.
- この まちは しずかじゃありません。kono machi wa shizuka ja arimasenThis town isn't quiet.
Common mistakes
- Saying いくないです: it's よくないです.
- Saying たかいじゃありません: い-adjectives never take じゃありません.
- Saying きれくないです: きれい is a な-adjective, it's きれいじゃありません.
