The past of です: でした

でした/じゃありませんでした

です → でした (it was), じゃありません → じゃありませんでした (it wasn't). For nouns and な-adjectives.

In short

です in the past becomes でした (“it was”). The past negative is じゃありませんでした (“it wasn't”).

  • きのうは 日曜日でした。kinō wa nichiyōbi deshitaYesterday was Sunday.
  • しけんは かんたんでした。shiken wa kantan deshitaThe exam was easy.
  • きのうは 休みじゃありませんでした。kinō wa yasumi ja arimasen deshitaYesterday wasn't a day off.

The basics

です has a past too: でした (“it was”). Its past negative is じゃありませんでした (“it wasn't”). These are forms of です, so they go with nouns and な-adjectives.

In practice

You use it to say what a person, a day or a situation was.

  • きのうは 日曜日でした。kinō wa nichiyōbi deshitaYesterday was Sunday.
  • 父は 先生でした。chichi wa sensei deshitaMy father was a teacher.
  • きのうは 休みじゃありませんでした。kinō wa yasumi ja arimasen deshitaYesterday wasn't a day off.

What about い-adjectives?

Careful: い-adjectives (たかい, おいしい) don't take でした. They have their own past: たかかったです. You'll see it in the lesson on adjectives in the past. でした is for nouns and な-adjectives.

Common mistakes

  • Saying おいしいでした: the past of おいしい is おいしかったです.
  • Writing ですでした: でした replaces です.
  • Forgetting でした in the past negative: じゃありません is present.
