The polite past: ました・ませんでした
Verb-ました/ませんでした
ます → ました (past), ません → ませんでした (past negative). One single past for “I did” and “I used to do”.
In short
In the past, ます becomes ました, and ません becomes ませんでした. たべます → たべました (I ate) → たべませんでした (I didn't eat).
- きのう えいがを 見ました。kinō eiga o mimashitaYesterday, I watched a film.
- けさ あさごはんを たべませんでした。kesa asagohan o tabemasen deshitaThis morning, I didn't have breakfast.
- どこへ 行きましたか。doko e ikimashita kaWhere did you go?
The basics
To put a polite verb in the past, you replace ます with ました. For the past negative, you add でした after ません: ませんでした. Nothing else in the sentence changes.
| Present | Past | |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | 行きます | 行きました |
| Negative | 行きません | 行きませんでした |
Telling what you did
With a time marker (きのう, yesterday; せんしゅう, last week), you can talk about your day or your weekend.
- きのう えいがを 見ました。kinō eiga o mimashitaYesterday, I saw a film.
- けさ 何も 食べませんでした。kesa nani mo tabemasen deshitaThis morning, I didn't eat anything.
One single past
Japanese has only one past tense: ました covers both “I ate” and “I used to eat”. Here again, the context makes it clear.
- 子どもの とき、よく 川で あそびました。kodomo no toki, yoku kawa de asobimashitaWhen I was a child, I often played in the river.
Common mistakes
- Saying ましたでした: the past affirmative is just ました.
- Forgetting でした in the past negative: 行きません = I'm not going, 行きませんでした = I didn't go.
- Looking for a separate form for “used to”: ました covers it too.
