Because: から

Reason から、consequence

Reason から、consequence = “…, so…”. Answer to どうして: ~からです.

In short

から after a sentence gives the reason: “さむいですから、コートを きます” = since it's cold, I'm putting on a coat. The reason comes first, then the consequence. To answer どうして (why), you end with ~からです.

  • あめですから、うちに います。ame desu kara, uchi ni imasuSince it's raining, I'm staying home.
  • つかれましたから、ねます。tsukaremashita kara, nemasuI'm tired, so I'm going to bed.
  • どうして 休みましたか。——びょうきでしたから。dōshite yasumimashita ka — byōki deshita karaWhy were you absent? — Because I was ill.

The basics

から after a sentence means “because”. In Japanese, the cause comes first, then the consequence: “it's raining, so I'm not going out” rather than “I'm not going out because it's raining”.

  • 雨ですから、出かけません。ame desu kara, dekakemasenIt's raining, so I'm not going out.
  • あたまが いたいですから、休みます。atama ga itai desu kara, yasumimasuI have a headache, so I'm resting.

Answering どうして

どうして (why) calls for an answer ending in から. You can answer with just the reason: “~から” or “~からです”.

  • どうして 休みましたか。——かぜを ひきましたから。dōshite yasumimashita ka. kaze o hikimashita karaWhy were you absent? — Because I caught a cold.

With which forms

から goes after a complete sentence. With N5 politeness: noun + ですから, い-adjective + ですから, verb + ますから. In casual style: 雨だから, さむいから, 行くから.

TypePolite formPlain form
noun雨ですから雨だから
い-adjectiveさむいですからさむいから
な-adjectiveひまですからひまだから
verb行きますから行くから

Common mistakes

  • Putting the consequence first as in English: in Japanese, the reason comes before から.
  • Mixing it up with から meaning “from, starting at” (駅から): here から follows a whole sentence.
  • Forgetting だ in plain style with a noun: 雨だから, not 雨から.
