Even more than: 〜にもまして
名詞 + にもまして;疑問詞 + にもまして
X にもまして = “even more than X (already high)”; 何にもまして = above all else, いつにもまして = more than ever. Written register.
In short
X にもまして Y: “even more than X”. X was already at a high level, and Y surpasses it. 去年にもまして暑い = it was already hot last year, and this year is worse. With a question word, you get very handy expressions: 何にもまして (above all else), 誰にもまして (more than anyone), いつにもまして (more than ever). Written register, speeches.
- 今年の夏は、去年にもまして暑い。ことしのなつは、きょねんにもましてあつい。This summer is even hotter than last year's.
- 健康は何にもまして大切だ。けんこうはなににもましてたいせつだ。Health matters above all else.
- 今日の彼女は、いつにもまして輝いている。きょうのかのじょは、いつにもましてかがやいている。Today she's radiant, more than ever.
The basics
増す (ます) means “to increase, to surpass”. にもまして is “surpassing even X”. The も is essential: it reminds you that X was already remarkable. So you're comparing two high levels, and the second is higher still.
This summer is even hotter than last year's.
- noun
- grammatical form
- adjective
- 今年の夏は去年にもまして暑い。ことしのなつはきょねんにもましてあつい。This summer is even hotter than last year's.
- 震災の後、地域のきずなは以前にもまして強くなった。しんさいのあと、ちいきのきずなはいぜんにもましてつよくなった。After the earthquake, community ties grew even stronger than before.
How to form it
にもまして goes after a noun, often a time reference (去年, 以前, 例年), or after a question word to form superlatives.
| Before | Construction | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| time reference | 去年/以前/例年にもまして | even more than last year, than before, than usual |
| 何 | 何にもまして | above all else |
| 誰 | 誰にもまして | more than anyone |
| いつ | いつにもまして | more than ever |
- 何にもまして心配なのは、子どもたちの将来だ。なににもましてしんぱいなのは、こどもたちのしょうらいだ。What worries me above all else is the children's future.
An already high starting point
You don't say “去年にもまして暑い” if last year was cool: X must already have the quality to a high degree. It's this idea of going one better that gives the construction its force, much prized in speeches and editorials.
- 今大会は、前回にもまして激しい戦いが予想される。こんたいかいは、ぜんかいにもましてはげしいたたかいがよそうされる。This tournament promises to be even more hard-fought than the last.
にもまして, より, 以上に
より simply compares two elements, without assuming the first is high. 以上に (“more than”) is close to にもまして but more neutral. にもまして is the written, emphatic version.
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜より | simple comparison | 去年より暑い |
| 〜以上に | exceeds X (neutral) | 予想以上に難しい |
| 〜にもまして | exceeds an already high X (written) | 去年にもまして暑い |
- 試験は予想以上に難しかった。しけんはよそういじょうにむずかしかった。The exam was harder than expected.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting も: the usual form is 去年にもまして; without も (“去年にまして”), it sounds old-fashioned or wrong.
- Choosing an X that lacks the quality: にもまして assumes X was already high.
- Inventing “どれにもまして”: the fixed forms are 何にも, 誰にも, いつにもまして.
