Ever since: 〜てからというもの

動詞て形 + からというもの

Verb in て + からというもの = “ever since A, everything has changed”: a turning point followed by a new, lasting state, often told with emotion.

In short

A てからというもの B: since the turning point A, the situation has changed profoundly and this new state continues. B describes the lasting change (〜ようになった, すっかり〜, ずっと〜ている), often with emotion. Written register, narrative, personal accounts.

  • 結婚してからというもの、彼はすっかり家庭的になった。けっこんしてからというもの、かれはすっかりかていてきになった。Ever since he got married, he's become a real homebody.
  • 犬を飼い始めてからというもの、毎朝散歩するようになった。いぬをかいはじめてからというもの、まいあささんぽするようになった。Ever since I got a dog, I go for a walk every morning.
  • 母が入院してからというもの、家の中は火が消えたように静かだ。ははがにゅういんしてからというもの、いえのなかはひがきえたようにしずかだ。Ever since my mother went into hospital, the house has been deathly quiet.

The basics

てから says “after”, というもの reinforces it: “since that moment, all that time”. The construction stresses a break: there's a before and an after A, and the after goes on — much like English “ever since…”.

It's used to tell of a turning point in life: a meeting, a marriage, a bereavement, a move, an illness, a new habit.

The sentence, piece by piece
結婚してget married (て-form)
からというものever since
彼はhe (topic)
すっかり変わったhas changed completely

Ever since he got married, he's changed completely.

  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • noun
  • 結婚してからというもの、彼はすっかり変わった。けっこんしてからというもの、かれはすっかりかわった。Ever since he got married, he's changed completely.
  • 東京に引っ越してからというもの、故郷のことばかり思い出す。とうきょうにひっこしてからというもの、こきょうのことばかりおもいだす。Ever since I moved to Tokyo, I can't stop thinking about my home town.

How to form it

Take the て-form of the verb and add からというもの. The second part describes a state or habit that lasts: 〜ている, 〜ようになった, 〜なくなった, ずっと, すっかり.

Verbて-formConstruction
結婚する結婚して結婚してからというもの
始める始めて始めてからというもの
会う会って会ってからというもの
読む読んで読んでからというもの
  • あの本を読んでからというもの、物の見方が変わった。あのほんをよんでからというもの、もののみかたがかわった。Ever since I read that book, my way of seeing things has changed.

A change that lasts

The second part is never a one-off event (“then I ate”), nor a request or a plan. It describes a new situation that continues up to the moment of speaking, often in an emotional tone.

  • 父が亡くなってからというもの、母はめっきり元気がなくなった。ちちがなくなってからというもの、はははめっきりげんきがなくなった。Ever since my father died, my mother has lost much of her spark.

てからというもの, てから, て以来

てから marks a simple sequence (“after A, B”). て以来 (N2) says “since A” neutrally and can describe a state that hasn't changed. てからというもの stresses the transformation and the emotion that goes with it.

FormMeaningExample
〜てからafter, then食べてから出かける
〜て以来since (neutral)卒業して以来会っていない
〜てからというものever since, everything changed会ってからというもの毎日が楽しい
  • 卒業して以来、彼には一度も会っていない。そつぎょうしていらい、かれにはいちどもあっていない。I haven't seen him once since we graduated.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a one-off event in what follows: “結婚してからというもの、旅行した” doesn't work; you need a lasting state.
  • Confusing it with からといって (“just because… doesn't mean”): the forms look alike, the meanings are unrelated.
  • Using it for an instruction: “食べてからというもの薬を飲んで” is wrong; it's 食べてから.
