Can't afford to keep: 〜てはいられない

Verb-て + はいられない(はいられません)

Verb in て + はいられない: the situation no longer lets you keep doing X; you have to react (遊んではいられない, こうしてはいられない). Not to be confused with 〜ずにはいられない.

In short

いられない is the negative potential of いる (“to stay, to be in a state”). So 〜てはいられない says you can no longer stay in the situation of X: circumstances force you to react. 試験が近いので、遊んではいられない (the exam is coming up, I can't afford to keep fooling around). It often goes with のんびりして, じっとして, 黙って, 泣いてばかり, and the fixed expression こうしてはいられない (“I can't just sit here”). Neutral register, spoken and written.

  • 試験まであと一週間だ。もう遊んではいられない。しけんまであといっしゅうかんだ。もうあそんではいられない。Only a week until the exam. I can't afford to fool around any more.
  • いつまでも泣いてばかりはいられない。いつまでもないてばかりはいられない。I can't spend all my time crying.
  • 社長が来るなら、のんびりしてはいられない。しゃちょうがくるなら、のんびりしてはいられない。If the president's coming, there's no time to take it easy.

The basics

Break it down: 遊んで (fooling around) + は (contrast) + いられない (can't stay). “Staying here fooling around is no longer possible.” It isn't a prohibition from outside: it's the speaker recognising that the situation (an exam, an emergency, a responsibility) forces a change of attitude.

The sentence almost always implies a follow-up: “…so I have to get down to it, act, react”.

Two いられない that are opposites

〜ずにはいられない (N3): “I can't help doing” (an impulse). 〜てはいられない: “I can't keep on doing” (you have to stop). Both can lead to the same act: 黙ってはいられない (I can't stay silent any longer, so I speak — a decision) and 言わずにはいられない (I can't help speaking — an impulse).

Also close: 〜どころではない, “it's no time at all for” (忙しくて旅行どころではない).

FormMeaningExample
〜てはいられないcan't keep on (something must change)黙ってはいられない

  • こんな不公平なやり方には、黙ってはいられない。こんなふこうへいなやりかたには、だまってはいられない。I can't stay silent in the face of such an unfair approach.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 〜てはいられない (“can't keep on”) and 〜ずにはいられない (“can't help”): the meanings are almost opposite.
  • Using it for a physical inability: ×足が痛くて歩いてはいられない. You say 歩けない.
  • Forgetting は: 遊んでいられない exists, but 遊んではいられない is the form that clearly marks the refusal to carry on.
