While doing: 〜ながら
Verb 1 (stem) + ながら、verb 2
Stem + ながら, main action = doing two things at the same time (same person).
In short
Verb stem + ながら = “while…”: two actions done at the same time by the same person. The main action is the second one, which carries the tense and politeness of the sentence.
- おんがくを 聞きながら べんきょうします。ongaku o kikinagara benkyō shimasuI study while listening to music.
- テレビを 見ながら ごはんを 食べました。terebi o minagara gohan o tabemashitaI ate while watching TV.
- あるきながら 話しましょう。arukinagara hanashimashōLet's talk while we walk.
The basics
Verb stem + ながら = “while…”: two actions done at the same time by the same person. The second action is the main one; the one with ながら is secondary, in the background. The order is the reverse of English: “I study while listening” becomes listening-ながら, study.
- おんがくを 聞きながら べんきょうします。ongaku o kikinagara benkyō shimasuI study while listening to music.
- テレビを 見ながら ごはんを 食べました。terebi o minagara gohan o tabemashitaI ate while watching TV.
Forming ながら
Take the ます-form and replace ます with ながら. Tense and politeness are carried by the last verb.
| ます-form | + ながら |
|---|---|
| 聞きます | 聞きながら |
| 見ます | 見ながら |
| 飲みます | 飲みながら |
| あるきます | あるきながら |
Only one person
ながら links two actions with the same subject. For two different people (“while you sleep, I read”), use ~あいだ (covered at N4).
- あるきながら 話しましょう。arukinagara hanashimashōLet's talk while we walk.
Common mistakes
- Using the て-form: “聞いてながら” is wrong, it's 聞きながら.
- Putting the main action in ながら: “I read the paper while drinking coffee” → コーヒーを 飲みながら 新聞を 読みます.
- Using ながら for two different people.
