Ongoing actions and states: ~ています
Verb-て + います
Verb-て + います: an action in progress, a habit, or a resulting state (けっこんして います = to be married).
In short
~ています describes an action in progress (いま テレビを 見ています = I'm watching TV right now), a habit (毎日 はしっています), or an ongoing state: けっこんしています (to be married), 東京に すんでいます (to live in Tokyo), しっています (to know).
- いま ごはんを たべています。ima gohan o tabete imasuI'm eating.
- あには 東京に すんでいます。ani wa tōkyō ni sunde imasuMy big brother lives in Tokyo.
- あめが ふっています。ame ga futte imasuIt's raining.
An action in progress: “to be doing”
て-form + います describes an action that's happening right now: ごはんを 食べて います (I'm eating). It's the present progressive.
- いま テレビを 見て います。ima terebi o mite imasuI'm watching TV.
- 雨が ふって います。ame ga futte imasuIt's raining. (the rain is falling right now)
A habit or a job
~ています also describes a regular activity or a lasting situation: where you work, what you study.
- 父は ぎんこうで はたらいて います。chichi wa ginkō de hataraite imasuMy father works at a bank.
- まいにち 日本語を べんきょうして います。mainichi nihongo o benkyō shite imasuI study Japanese every day.
A state resulting from an action
With some verbs, ~ています describes the state that follows the action, not the action itself. けっこんして います = “I'm married” (the wedding happened and the state continues), not “I'm getting married”.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| けっこんして います | to be married |
| すんで います | to live (東京に すんで います) |
| しって います | to know |
| もって います | to have, to own |
| めがねを かけて います | to wear glasses |
The negative
~ていません. With しって います, careful: the negative is しりません (I don't know), not しって いません.
Common mistakes
- Translating けっこんして います as “I'm getting married”: it's “I'm married”.
- Saying しって いません: you say しりません.
- Using ~ます for an action in progress: 食べます = I eat (in general, or I'll eat), 食べて います = I'm eating.
