Although, while being: 〜ながら(も)
Verb (ます-stem)・い-adj・な-adj・noun + ながら(も)
State (adjective, noun, 知っている…) + ながら(も): “although, while being” (狭いながらも楽しい). Fixed formulas: 残念ながら, 恐縮ながら, 陰ながら. With an action verb alone, ながら still means “at the same time”.
In short
〜ながら(も): “although, while being”; a concession about a state: you acknowledge X, and yet the opposite of what you'd expect happens (狭いながらも楽しい我が家, “a home that's small, but a happy one”). Fixed forms: 残念ながら, 恐縮ながら, 陰ながら. Written, formal style.
- 狭いながらも楽しい我が家。せまいながらもたのしいわがや。Our home may be small, but it's a happy one.
- 彼は事実を知っていながら、何も言わなかった。かれはじじつをしっていながら、なにもいわなかった。He knew the truth, and yet he said nothing.
- この店は小さいながらも、料理は本格的だ。このみせはちいさいながらも、りょうりはほんかくてきだ。This restaurant may be small, but its cooking is the real thing.
The basics
You know ながら in the sense of “while doing” (two simultaneous actions). At N1, you work on its other meaning: concession. With a state (an adjective, a noun, a state verb like 知っている), 〜ながら(も) means “although, while being”. も reinforces the concession.
This meaning is very written: descriptions, reviews, letters. You find it in many fixed polite formulas.
Our home may be small, but it's a happy one.
- adjective
- grammatical form
- noun
- 狭いながらも楽しい我が家。せまいながらもたのしいわがや。Our home may be small, but it's a happy one.
- 子どもながら、彼の演奏には人を感動させる力がある。こどもながら、かれのえんそうにはひとをかんどうさせるちからがある。Though only a child, his playing has the power to move people.
How to form it
Verb: ます-stem (知りながら), or ている-form (知っていながら). い-adjective: dictionary form. な-adjective and noun: directly, without な or の. Several fixed formulas are worth knowing.
| Before ながら | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | ます-stem / 〜ていながら | 知りながら・知っていながら |
| い-adjective | dictionary form | 狭いながらも |
| な-adjective | stem | 不便ながらも |
| Noun | directly | 子どもながら |
| Fixed formulas | 残念ながら・恐縮ながら・陰ながら | 陰ながら応援しています |
- 恐縮ながら、一言ご挨拶申し上げます。きょうしゅくながら、ひとことごあいさつもうしあげます。If I may humbly take the floor for a few moments.
- 陰ながら、皆様のご活躍をお祈りしております。かげながら、みなさまのごかつやくをおいのりしております。I'm quietly but sincerely wishing you all every success.
Simultaneity or concession?
With an action verb (食べる, 歩く, 聞く), ながら generally expresses two simultaneous actions: テレビを見ながら食べる. With a state (an adjective, a noun, 知っている, いる, ある) or with も, it's almost always a concession. Context and the contradiction between the two parts decide.
Compared with のに, ながら(も) is more written and less loaded with reproach. Compared with ものの, it's mainly about a state or a quality. つつ(も) is its written equivalent for verbs: 悪いと思いつつも.
| Expression | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action verb + ながら | at the same time | 歩きながら話す |
| State + ながら(も) | although (written) | 狭いながらも楽しい |
| 〜のに | although (reproach, spoken) | 知っているのに教えない |
| Verb + つつ(も) | while (written) | 悪いと思いつつも |
- 悪いと思いつつも、つい甘えてしまう。わるいとおもいつつも、ついあまえてしまう。I know it's not right, yet I always end up taking advantage.
- 知っているのに、どうして教えてくれないの?しっているのに、どうしておしえてくれないの?You know, so why won't you tell me?
Common mistakes
- Always reading ながら as “while doing”: with a state (狭い, 子ども, 知っている), it's a concession.
- Adding な or の before ながら: you say 不便ながら and 子どもながら, not “×不便なながら” or “×子どものながら”.
- Contrasting two different subjects: ながら(も) is in principle about one and the same person or thing (彼は知っていながら黙っていた); to contrast two separate subjects, you use のに or が.
