Just because: 〜ばかりに

plain form (な-adj な/である, N である) + ばかりに

Plain form + ばかりに: a trivial cause led to an unfortunate result you regret. 〜たいばかりに: a desire so strong it drives an outsized effort.

In short

〜ばかりに names an often trivial cause that led to an unfortunate consequence, and the speaker regrets it: “just because, simply for having…”. With たい (〜たいばかりに), it expresses, on the contrary, a desire so strong that it drives an extraordinary effort.

  • 一言余計なことを言ったばかりに、けんかになってしまった。ひとことよけいなことをいったばかりに、けんかになってしまった。Just because I said one word too many, we ended up arguing.
  • 英語ができないばかりに、いい仕事を逃した。えいごができないばかりに、いいしごとをのがした。Just because I can't speak English, I missed out on a good job.
  • 母に会いたいばかりに、彼は雪の中を十キロも歩いた。ははにあいたいばかりに、かれはゆきのなかをじゅっきろもあるいた。Just to see his mother, he walked ten kilometres through the snow.

The basics

ばかり means “only”. So 〜ばかりに is “only because of that”: a single, sometimes tiny cause had a disproportionate, regrettable consequence. You can hear the speaker's sigh: “if only I hadn't…”.

The second part is almost always a negative result that has already happened (けんかになった, 仕事を逃した, 叱られた).

  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 私が地図を忘れたばかりに、みんなが道に迷ってしまった。わたしがちずをわすれたばかりに、みんながみちにまよってしまった。All because I forgot the map: everyone got lost.

How to form it

Put a plain form before ばかりに: a verb in the past or present, an い-adjective, a な-adjective with な or である, a noun with である.

BaseFormExample
Verb〜た/〜ない + ばかりに言ったばかりに、できないばかりに
い-adj〜い + ばかりに背が低いばかりに
な-adj〜な/〜である + ばかりに正直なばかりに
NounN である + ばかりに外国人であるばかりに
Desire〜たい + ばかりに会いたいばかりに
  • 外国人であるばかりに、部屋を貸してもらえなかった。がいこくじんであるばかりに、へやをかしてもらえなかった。Just because I was a foreigner, they wouldn't rent me the flat.
  • 正直なばかりに、彼はいつも損をしている。しょうじきなばかりに、かれはいつもそんをしている。He always loses out, simply because he's honest.

〜たいばかりに: a desire that drives you far

With たい, the nuance changes: an intense desire explains an unusual effort or sacrifice. The result isn't necessarily negative, but it's always out of proportion to the motive.

  • 人気のパンを買いたいばかりに、朝五時から並んだ。にんきのぱんをかいたいばかりに、あさごじからならんだ。Just to buy that hugely popular bread, I queued from five in the morning.

ばかりに, せいで, ために, たばかり

せいで (N3) blames a cause, often someone else. ために is neutral (cause or purpose). ばかりに stresses the gap between a small cause and a big mess, with regret.

Don't confuse it with 〜たばかり (N4), “have just”: 食べたばかりだ = “I've just eaten”.

ConstructionNuanceExample
〜ばかりにsmall cause, big regret一言言ったばかりに
〜せいでblaming a cause雨のせいで中止になった
〜ためにneutral cause, written tone事故のために遅れた
〜たばかりhave just今着いたばかりだ
  • 今着いたばかりなので、まだ何も分からない。いまついたばかりなので、まだなにもわからない。I've only just arrived, so I don't know anything yet. (たばかり)

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a good consequence (勉強したばかりに合格した): for a happy result, you say おかげで.
  • Mixing up 食べたばかりに (“just because I ate”) and 食べたばかりだ (“I've just eaten”).
  • Forgetting な or である after a な-adjective or a noun: 正直なばかりに, 外国人であるばかりに.
