Leaving out, without: 〜を抜きにして
N + を抜きにして/は抜きにして ; N + 抜きで/抜きの + N ; N + を抜きにしては〜ない/抜きには〜ない
N + を抜きにして: “without X, doing without X”; N + を抜きにしては〜ない: “impossible without X”. 抜きで, more spoken, deliberately leaves something out.
In short
〜を抜きにして has two uses. First, deliberately leaving out something you'd expect: “without, doing without” (堅い挨拶は抜きにして). Second, with は and a negative, showing that something is indispensable: “without X, it's impossible to…” (彼の協力を抜きにしては成功しなかった). 抜きで is the short, spoken version.
- 堅い挨拶は抜きにして、早速始めましょう。かたいあいさつはぬきにして、さっそくはじめましょう。Let's skip the formalities and get started right away.
- 名古屋の食文化は、みそを抜きにしては語れない。なごやのしょくぶんかは、みそをぬきにしてはかたれない。You can't talk about Nagoya's food culture without talking about miso.
- 今日は仕事の話は抜きで、楽しく飲もう。きょうはしごとのはなしはぬきで、たのしくのもう。Tonight, no shop talk: let's just have a drink and enjoy ourselves.
The basics
抜く means “to remove, to take out”. So the noun 抜き means “without, leaving out”. 〜を抜きにして: “doing without X”. You use it to set aside something that would normally be there: formalities, jokes, work, an ingredient.
Turned round with は and a negative, the same construction says you precisely can't do without X: “without X, nothing is possible”.
Let's skip the formalities and get started right away.
- noun
- grammatical form
- other
- verb
- 今日は遠慮は抜きにして、何でも言ってください。きょうはえんりょはぬきにして、なんでもいってください。Today, no standing on ceremony: say whatever's on your mind.
How to form it
を抜きにして follows a noun; は抜きにして makes the noun the topic, very common with formalities (挨拶, 冗談, 遠慮). 抜きで and 抜きの + N are shorter and more spoken: at a restaurant, わさび抜き, 氷抜き. For “indispensable”, use を抜きにしては or 抜きには, followed by a negative or a negative potential.
| Form | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| N を抜きにして | 冗談を抜きにして | joking aside |
| N は抜きにして | 挨拶は抜きにして | skipping the formalities |
| N 抜きで/抜きの N | わさび抜きで | without wasabi (spoken) |
| N を抜きにしては〜ない | みそを抜きにしては語れない | impossible without X |
| N 抜きには〜ない | 彼抜きには考えられない | impossible without X |
- すしをわさび抜きで注文した。すしをわさびぬきでちゅうもんした。I ordered sushi without wasabi.
- 家族の支えを抜きにしては、今の私はなかった。かぞくのささえをぬきにしては、いまのわたしはなかった。Without my family's support, I wouldn't be where I am today.
The “indispensable” use
With を抜きにしては, the second part is always negative: 語れない, 考えられない, 成り立たない, 成功しなかった. You assert X's central role by imagining it gone. It's a common construction in presentations and thank-you speeches.
- 自動車産業を抜きにしては、愛知県の経済は考えられない。じどうしゃさんぎょうをぬきにしては、あいちけんのけいざいはかんがえられない。Aichi Prefecture's economy is unthinkable without the car industry.
Compare: なしで, はともかく
なしで simply notes an absence, intended or not (傘なしで出かけた: without an umbrella, perhaps by forgetting). 抜きで deliberately removes something that would normally be there. はともかく sets aside a topic of discussion, not a concrete item.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 傘なしで出かけた | without an umbrella (simple absence) |
| わさび抜きで頼んだ | without wasabi (left out on purpose) |
| 値段はともかく、味はいい | not talking about the price |
- 傘なしで出かけて、雨にぬれてしまった。かさなしででかけて、あめにぬれてしまった。I went out without an umbrella and got soaked.
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with 抜く meaning to pull out or to overtake (歯を抜く, 前の車を抜く).
- Forgetting the negative in the “indispensable” use: “×みそを抜きにしては語れる” makes no sense.
- Saying 抜きで for an unintended absence: a forgotten umbrella is 傘なしで.
