There's no point even if: 〜たところで
Verb-た + ところで + negative conclusion (〜ない/むだだ/たかが知れている)
Verb-た + ところで: “even if you did X, it'd be (almost) no use”. A hypothesis judged futile; negative or dismissive ending; distinguish it from たところ (discovery).
In short
〜たところで sets up a hypothesis only to declare it pointless: “even if you did X, it wouldn't help”, or “the result would be minimal”. The ending is always negative or dismissive, often with いくら, どんなに, 今さら, どうせ. The tone is resigned or critical. Neutral register, spoken and written.
- 今から急いだところで、間に合わないよ。いまからいそいだところで、まにあわないよ。Even if we hurry now, we won't make it in time.
- いくら謝ったところで、許してもらえないだろう。いくらあやまったところで、ゆるしてもらえないだろう。However much you apologise, he probably won't forgive you.
- 彼に相談したところで、何も変わらない。かれにそうだんしたところで、なにもかわらない。Talking it over with him won't change anything.
The basics
After the た-form, ところで means “even at the point of having done X”. The speaker imagines making the effort, then declares in advance that the result will be zero or insignificant. They've already decided the action isn't worth it.
It's a construction of resignation (“what's the point?”) or criticism (“there's no use…”).
Even if we hurry now, we won't make it in time.

How to form it
The verb always goes in the た-form, even for a future action: 今から急いだところで. The adverbs いくら, どんなに, たとえ stress the effort; 今さら says it's too late; どうせ marks resignation. The conclusion is negative (〜ない, むだだ, 意味がない) or dismissive (せいぜい, たかが知れている, 大したことはない).
| Element | Example | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Verb-た + ところで | 急いだところで | the hypothesis |
| いくら/どんなに | いくら謝ったところで | stresses the effort |
| 今さら | 今さら行ったところで | too late |
| Negative ending | 〜ない/むだだ | zero result |
| Dismissive ending | せいぜい〜/たかが知れている | negligible result |
- 今さら行ったところで、もう店は閉まっているよ。いまさらいったところで、もうみせはしまっているよ。If you go now, the shop will already be closed.
- たとえ売れたところで、利益はたかが知れている。たとえうれたところで、りえきはたかがしれている。Even if it sold, the profit would be negligible.
Compare: としても, ても
ても (N4) is the general “even if”. としても (N2) sets up a hypothesis whose conclusion doesn't change, whether positive or negative. たところで imposes a conclusion that belittles the action: pointless or insignificant. It can also downplay a risk to reassure: “even if it fails, it's no big deal”.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 失敗しても、またやればいい | even if it fails (neutral) |
| 失敗したとしても、やる価値はある | even supposing it failed |
| 失敗したところで、大したことはない | a failure? no big deal (downplaying) |
- 試験に落ちたところで、死ぬわけじゃない。しけんにおちたところで、しぬわけじゃない。Failing an exam isn't the end of the world.
たところで or たところ?
たところ (N3) relates a real past fact followed by a discovery: “when I did X, it turned out that…”. たところで imagines an action only to declare it futile. A single で separates a story from a resigned hypothesis.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 先生に相談したところ、いい答えが出た | I asked, and got a good answer (real) |
| 先生に相談したところで、いい答えは出ない | even if I asked, it'd get me nowhere |
- 先生に相談したところ、いいアドバイスをもらえた。せんせいにそうだんしたところ、いいあどばいすをもらえた。I asked the teacher for advice, and got some good tips.
- 先生に相談したところで、いい答えは出ないだろう。せんせいにそうだんしたところで、いいこたえはでないだろう。Even if we asked the teacher, we probably wouldn't get a good answer.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up たところで (“what's the point of…”) and たところ (“when I did…, it turned out that…”).
- Putting a positive outcome of the action after it: “×急いだところで、間に合う”. The ending is negative or dismissive.
- Thinking た marks the past: the hypothesis can be about the future (今から急いだところで).
