Even if, even supposing: 〜としても

plain form (N・な-adj + だ) + としても ; spoken: としたって

Plain form + としても: “even supposing that…, even if…”. A hypothesis, often unlikely, that doesn't change the conclusion; in speech, としたって.

In short

〜としても sets up a hypothesis in order to say it wouldn't change anything: “even supposing that…, even if…”. The supposition is often unlikely or contrary to fact, and it's readily reinforced with たとえ, かりに or いくら. In casual speech, you hear としたって. Neutral register.

  • 今から出たとしても、もう間に合わないだろう。いまからでたとしても、もうまにあわないだろう。Even if we left now, we wouldn't make it in time.
  • たとえ反対されたとしても、私はこの道を選ぶ。たとえはんたいされたとしても、わたしはこのみちをえらぶ。Even if people object, I'll choose this path.
  • 宝くじが当たったとしても、仕事はやめないと思う。たからくじがあたったとしても、しごとはやめないとおもう。Even if I won the lottery, I don't think I'd quit my job.

The basics

としても breaks down into と (quotation) + する (“to posit, to suppose”) + ても (“even if”). Literally: “even positing that X”. The speaker imagines a case, often an unlikely one, and asserts that the conclusion would stay the same.

So it's a purely hypothetical concession: you're not talking about a real fact, but about a supposition you brush aside.

How to form it

としても follows a plain form; with a noun or a な-adjective, you keep だ. The た-form is very common, even for the future (今から出たとしても). たとえ, かりに, いくら, どんなに often signal the hypothesis. In speech: としたって.

としても, ても, にしても

ても (N4) is the general “even if”: it works for a real fact as well as a hypothesis. としても stresses that the condition is supposed, often unreal. にしても (next point) starts from a fact you accept in order to qualify it: “fine, you were busy, but still…”.

雨が降っても、試合は行いますeven if it rains (real or not)

  • 忙しいにしても、電話くらいはできたはずだ。いそがしいにしても、でんわくらいはできたはずだ。OK, you were busy, but you could at least have phoned.

としても or として + も?

として (N3) means “as”. Followed by も, it gives として + も: “also as”. The spelling is identical! After a noun for a role or function (社長, 父親, 歌手), it's almost always “also as…”. After a verb or a hypothesis, it's “even if”.

  • 彼女は歌手としても、女優としても成功した。かのじょはかしゅとしても、じょゆうとしてもせいこうした。She was successful both as a singer and as an actress.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a real, known fact: if it really rained, you say 雨が降ったのに/降ったが, not “×雨が降ったとしても、試合をした”.
  • Confusing it with として + も: 社長としても = “also as CEO”.
  • Using としたって in writing or a formal context: it's a spoken form.
