As if: 〜かのように

plain form (Noun/な-adj + である) + かのように・かのような

Plain form (Noun / な-adj + である) + かのように / かのような: “as if”, comparing with a situation that isn't real. Written tone.

In short

〜かのように means “as if”: you compare reality to a situation that isn't true. 何も知らないかのような顔: a face as if he knew nothing (when he does know). It's a rather written phrasing, common in narratives.

  • 彼は何も知らないかのような顔をしている。かれはなにもしらないかのようなかおをしている。He's wearing a look as if he knew nothing about it.
  • 十月なのに、まるで夏に戻ったかのように暑い。じゅうがつなのに、まるでなつにもどったかのようにあつい。It's October, but it's as hot as if summer had come back.
  • 彼女はその町を、自分の目で見たかのように話した。かのじょはそのまちを、じぶんのめでみたかのようにはなした。She talked about that town as if she'd seen it with her own eyes.

The basics

か expresses doubt, ように comparison: 〜かのように is “as if perhaps…”. You describe a way of acting or a state by comparing it to an imaginary situation. The reader understands that reality is different.

How to form it

Verbs and い-adjectives: plain form (often in the past). Nouns and な-adjectives: with である (the written form of だ). Then かのように (adverb), かのような + noun, or かのようだ at the end of a sentence. まるで often reinforces it.

  • 彼女はつらいのに、平気であるかのように振る舞った。かのじょはつらいのに、へいきであるかのようにふるまった。She was hurting, but she behaved as if everything were fine.

かのように, ように, みたいに

ように and みたいに compare with something that may be true or similar: 雪のように白い (white as snow). かのように stresses that the comparison is false or imaginary: 雪が降ったかのように白い (white as if it had snowed, when it hasn't). In speech, people say みたいに instead.

〜かのようにan unreal situationwritten, narrative
  • 庭は、雪が降ったかのように白い花でいっぱいだった。にわは、ゆきがふったかのようにしろいはなでいっぱいだった。The garden was so full of white flowers it looked as if it had snowed.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a real resemblance: “white as snow” is 雪のように白い, not 雪であるかのように.
  • Attaching a noun directly: 「大人かのように」 is clumsy; say 大人であるかのように.
  • Using it in casual conversation: in speech, go for みたいに.
