Like, in the same way: 〜ように・〜ような
Noun + の / Verb + ように・ような
Noun + の / verb + ように (before a verb) or ような (before a noun): “like, as, in the same way as”. Key phrases: いつものように, 次のように, 言ったように.
In short
〜ように and 〜ような mean “like, in the same way as”: いつものように (as usual), 次のように (as follows), 雪のような白さ (a snow-like whiteness). ように goes before a verb or an adjective, ような before a noun.
- いつものように、朝六時に起きた。いつものように、あさろくじにおきた。As usual, I got up at six.
- 次のように書いてください。つぎのようにかいてください。Please write it as follows.
- 先生が言ったように、この寺は千年前に建てられた。せんせいがいったように、このてらはせんねんまえにたてられた。As the teacher said, this temple was built a thousand years ago.
The basics
よう refers to manner, appearance. With に, it works as an adverb (“in the same way as”); with な, it qualifies a noun (“which is like”). You compare one thing with another, or refer to something already said or known — English “as” and “like”.
I got up as usual.
- noun
- particle
- grammatical form
- verb
- 前にも言ったように、明日は休みです。まえにもいったように、あしたはやすみです。As I said before, we're closed tomorrow.
- 彼女は花のような人だ。かのじょははなのようなひとだ。She's a radiant person, like a flower.
How to form it
After a noun: の. After a verb: plain form. After この, その, あの: directly (このように, “like this, thus”). Then ように before a verb, ような before a noun.
| Base | + ように (before a verb) | + ような (before a noun) |
|---|---|---|
| noun | 雪のように白い | 雪のような白さ |
| verb | 言ったように書く | 言ったような話 |
| demonstrative | このようにする | このような問題 |
| set phrases | いつものように・次のように | 次のような例 |
- このようにすれば、うまくいきます。このようにすれば、うまくいきます。If you do it this way, it'll work.
- 答えは次のようになります。こたえはつぎのようになります。The answer is as follows.
Three ように not to mix up
“As, like” (this lesson): 言ったように, いつものように. “So that”: 忘れないように書いておく (you write it down so as not to forget), often with a potential or negative verb. Conjecture: 雨が降るようだ (it looks like rain), at the end of a sentence.
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 先生が言ったように書く | write as the teacher said |
| 忘れないようにメモする | make a note so as not to forget (purpose) |
| 雨が降るようだ | it looks like rain (conjecture) |
- 忘れないように、ノートに書いておいた。わすれないように、のーとにかいておいた。I wrote it in my notebook so I wouldn't forget.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting の after a noun: 「雪ように」 is wrong; it's 雪のように.
- Putting ような before a verb: 「雪のような降る」 is wrong; before a verb or an adjective, it's ように.
- Mixing up “like” and “so that”: the “so that” meaning mostly follows a potential or a negative (読めるように, 忘れないように).
