Just because: 〜からといって
plain form + からといって、〜わけではない・とは限らない
A からといって、B わけではない/とは限らない: “just because A doesn't mean B”. Rejecting a hasty conclusion. Spoken: からって.
In short
〜からといって rejects a hasty conclusion: “just because A doesn't mean B”. The end of the sentence is almost always negative: 〜わけではない, 〜とは限らない, or a ban (〜てはいけない). In speech, people say 〜からって.
- 日本人だからといって、みんな着物が着られるわけではない。にほんじんだからといって、みんなきものがきられるわけではない。Just because you're Japanese doesn't mean you can put on a kimono.
- 高いからといって、おいしいとは限らない。たかいからといって、おいしいとはかぎらない。Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's good.
- 眠いからといって、仕事中に寝てはいけない。ねむいからといって、しごとちゅうにねてはいけない。Even if you're sleepy, you mustn't sleep at work.
The basics
から gives a reason. からといって quotes that reason (といって, “saying”) in order to challenge it: “on the grounds that A, you might think B… well, no”. The second part always corrects the reasoning. It's English “just because… doesn't mean…”.
Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's good.
- adjective
- grammatical form
- 京都に住んでいるからといって、京都のことを何でも知っているわけではない。きょうとにすんでいるからといって、きょうとのことをなんでもしっているわけではない。Just because I live in Kyoto doesn't mean I know everything about Kyoto.
How to form it
The first part is in the plain form; after a noun or a な-adjective, keep だ. The ending is negative: you deny the conclusion, say it isn't always true, or forbid something.
| Sentence ending | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜わけではない | it's not that | 日本人だからといって、着物が着られるわけではない |
| 〜とは限らない | not necessarily | 高いからといって、おいしいとは限らない |
| 〜てはいけない・〜ないで | you mustn't | 眠いからといって、寝てはいけない |
- 眠いからといって、仕事中に寝てはいけない。ねむいからといって、しごとちゅうにねてはいけない。Even if you're sleepy, you mustn't sleep at work.
- ちょっと失敗したからって、あきらめないで。ちょっとしっぱいしたからって、あきらめないで。Just because you messed up a bit doesn't mean you should give up.
からといって or といっても?
からといって attacks a conclusion: “A, therefore B? Not necessarily.” といっても tones down what you've just announced: “A… well, not that much”. The first exposes faulty reasoning; the second scales down a statement.
| Form | What it corrects | Example |
|---|---|---|
| からといって | the conclusion drawn from it | 料理が好きだからといって、上手なわけではない |
| といっても | the scale of what's said | 料理ができるといっても、カレーぐらいだ |
- 料理が好きだからといって、上手なわけではない。りょうりがすきだからといって、じょうずなわけではない。Just because I like cooking doesn't mean I'm good at it.
- 子どもだからといって、何をしてもいいわけではない。こどもだからといって、なにをしてもいいわけではない。Just because you're a child doesn't mean you can do whatever you like.
Common mistakes
- Using it like a plain から: 「雨だからといって、出かけない」 is wrong; for “since it's raining, I'm not going out”, it's 雨だから出かけない.
- Ending with an affirmative: the second part is almost always negative (わけではない, とは限らない, てはいけない).
- Forgetting だ after a noun: 日本人だからといって, not 日本人からといって.
