Although I say: 〜といっても

plain form / Noun + といっても

Noun / plain form + といっても: “well, when I say that…”, bringing what you just said down to size (〜だけ, 〜ぐらい).

In short

〜といっても tones down what you've just said, so that people don't imagine it bigger than it is: “I can cook… well, curry, anyway”. English says “well,…”, “when I say…, I mean…”, “if you can call it that”.

  • 料理ができるといっても、カレーぐらいです。りょうりができるといっても、かれーぐらいです。I can cook… well, curry, and that's about it.
  • 旅行といっても、となりの町に一晩泊まるだけです。りょこうといっても、となりのまちにひとばんとまるだけです。A trip, if you can call it that: just one night in the next town.
  • 冬休みといっても、三日しかない。ふゆやすみといっても、みっかしかない。Winter holidays — yeah, right: there are only three days.

The basics

といっても, word for word: “even if you say…”. You pick up a word you've just used (or one the other person might misunderstand) and scale it down. It's a very natural form of modesty or precision.

The sentence, piece by piece
料理がcooking (object)
できるcan do

カレーぐらいですit's about curry

I can cook… well, curry, and that's about it.

  • noun
  • verb
  • grammatical form
  • 京都に住んでいるといっても、駅から遠い田舎のほうです。きょうとにすんでいるといっても、えきからとおいいなかのほうです。I live in Kyoto… well, out in the countryside, a long way from the station.
  • 先生といっても、まだ二十三歳です。せんせいといっても、まだにじゅうさんさいです。He's a teacher, sure, but he's only twenty-three.

How to form it

After a noun, といっても attaches directly (旅行といっても). After a verb or an adjective, use the plain form; with a な-adjective, だ is often kept. What follows brings things back down to size: 〜だけ, 〜ぐらい, 〜しかない, 〜ほどではない.

WordFormExample
NounNoun + といっても旅行といっても
Verbplain form + といってもできるといっても
い-adjectiveplain form + といっても寒いといっても
な-adjectiveだ + といってもにぎやかだといっても
  • 寒いといっても、雪は降らない。さむいといっても、ゆきはふらない。It's cold, but it doesn't snow, you know.
  • にぎやかだといっても、東京ほどではない。にぎやかだといっても、とうきょうほどではない。It's lively, but not as lively as Tokyo.

といっても, からといって, けれども

けれども simply contrasts two ideas. といっても says the first idea is less strong than it seems. からといって, on the other hand, challenges a conclusion you might draw from it. With といっても, what you said remains true: you really can cook curry!

FormRoleExample
けれどもsimple contrast料理は好きだけれども、時間がない
といってもscaling down what you just said料理ができるといっても、カレーぐらいだ
からといってchallenging a conclusion好きだからといって、上手なわけではない
  • 料理は好きだけれども、時間がない。りょうりはすきだけれども、じかんがない。I like cooking, but I don't have time.

Common mistakes

  • Translating it as “although”: といっても doesn't contrast, it qualifies. Think “well, when I say…”.
  • Mixing it up with からといって: といっても scales down a statement, からといって rejects a conclusion.
  • Leaving out the second part that scales things down (だけ, ぐらい, しかない): without it, the sentence is left hanging.
