To end up, all the way to: 〜に至る/〜に至るまで
Noun・Verb (dictionary form) + に至る/に至るまで/に至った
〜に至る: ending up, after a process, at a notable outcome (辞任するに至った). AからBに至るまで: “from A right up to B”, all included. Written style.
In short
〜に至る has two written uses. It says a development ends up, after a process, at an extreme or serious point (辞任するに至った, “it came to the point where he resigned”). And 〜から〜に至るまで extends a list to its furthest case (子どもからお年寄りに至るまで, “from children right up to the elderly”). Press, report and essay style.
- 度重なる不祥事の末、社長は辞任するに至った。たびかさなるふしょうじのすえ、しゃちょうはじにんするにいたった。After a series of scandals, the president ended up resigning.
- この祭りには、子どもからお年寄りに至るまで、町中の人が参加する。このまつりには、こどもからおとしよりにいたるまで、まちじゅうのひとがさんかする。The whole town takes part in this festival, from children right up to the elderly.
- 両国の対立は、ついに国交断絶に至った。りょうこくのたいりつは、ついにこっこうだんぜつにいたった。The conflict between the two countries finally ended in the severing of diplomatic relations.
The basics
至る means “to arrive at, to end up at”. 〜に至る describes the end point of a process: it stresses the road travelled and the seriousness of the outcome. The adverbs ついに, とうとう, 結局 often go with it.
〜に至るまで, for its part, means “right up to” in a list, stressing that even the furthest case is included.
It came to the point where the president resigned.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 社長は辞任するに至った。しゃちょうはじにんするにいたった。It came to the point where the president resigned.
- 長年の調査の結果、ようやく真相の解明に至った。ながねんのちょうさのけっか、ようやくしんそうのかいめいにいたった。After years of investigation, the full truth was finally brought to light.
How to form it
It goes after a noun or a verb in the dictionary form. In the past (に至った), it relates an outcome; in the form 〜に至った + noun, it describes what led to something.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + に至る | end in, reach | 合意に至る |
| Verb + に至る | come to the point of doing | 辞任するに至る |
| 〜に至った + noun | that led to | 決断に至った理由 |
| AからBに至るまで | from A right up to B (all included) | 北海道から沖縄に至るまで |
| 〜には至らない | not go as far as | 大事には至らなかった |
- 幸い、けがは大事には至らなかった。さいわい、けがはだいじにはいたらなかった。Fortunately, the injury wasn't serious.
- 北海道から沖縄に至るまで、全国で記録を更新する暑さとなった。ほっかいどうからおきなわにいたるまで、ぜんこくできろくをこうしんするあつさとなった。From Hokkaidō all the way to Okinawa, the whole country saw record-breaking heat.
に至る, まで or にまで?
まで is neutral: 駅まで歩く, 夜まで働く. に至るまで adds the idea of an exhaustive list that goes right to the end, and it belongs to writing. にまで expresses surprise: “even as far as…!” (子どもにまで知られている).
As for outcomes, に至る is kept for a notable result: a resignation, a breakdown, an agreement, a discovery. For an ordinary step (getting to the station, finishing a meal), it sounds grandiose.
- そのうわさは子どもにまで知られている。そのうわさはこどもにまでしられている。Even children know about that rumour.
- この道は峠を越えて隣の県に至る。このみちはとうげをこえてとなりのけんにいたる。This road crosses the pass and leads into the neighbouring prefecture.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a trivial step: “×昼ご飯を食べるに至った” is ridiculous; 至る announces a notable outcome.
- Putting the verb in the ます-form or the past before に至る: it's always the dictionary form (辞任するに至った, not ×辞任したに至った).
- Mixing up に至るまで (“right up to”, a complete list) and に至っては (“as for the extreme case of…”, next point).
