Action noun + を余儀なくされる/を余儀なくさせる
Action noun + を余儀なくされる: being forced by circumstances (中止を余儀なくされた). Cause + を余儀なくさせる: the cause imposes it. Objective tone, press style.
In short
〜を余儀なくされる: being forced, by outside circumstances you can't control, to do something you didn't want to (中止, 撤退, 変更, 入院…). 余儀ない means “leaving no other choice”. In the form 〜を余儀なくさせる, the cause is the subject: “the crisis forced the company to…”. Press, report and press-release style.
- 台風の影響で、大会は中止を余儀なくされた。たいふうのえいきょうで、たいかいはちゅうしをよぎなくされた。Because of the typhoon, the tournament had to be cancelled.
- 業績の悪化により、同社は海外からの撤退を余儀なくされた。ぎょうせきのあっかにより、どうしゃはかいがいからのてったいをよぎなくされた。Faced with worsening results, the company was forced to pull out of overseas markets.
- 円安が多くの中小企業に値上げを余儀なくさせている。えんやすがおおくのちゅうしょうきぎょうにねあげをよぎなくさせている。The weak yen is forcing many small businesses to raise their prices.
The basics
余儀 means “another way”: 余儀ない is “with no other way, unavoidable”. So 〜を余儀なくされる reads “to have X forced on you for lack of any other choice”. The cause is external (the weather, a crisis, an accident, someone else's decision), and the subject is on the receiving end.
It's the standard newspaper formula for saying an event had to be cancelled, postponed or moved, or that a company had to withdraw.
Because of the typhoon, the tournament had to be cancelled.

- grammatical form

How to form it
Before を, put an action noun, most often a する-noun (中止, 変更, 撤退, 入院, 延期). Never a conjugated verb. Two constructions depending on the subject: the one who suffers it (passive される), or the cause that imposes it (causative させる).
| Form | Subject | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + を余儀なくされる | the one who suffers it | 大会は中止を余儀なくされた |
| Cause が + (person に) + Noun + を余儀なくさせる | the cause | 不況が企業に撤退を余儀なくさせた |
| 余儀ない + noun | unavoidable (adjective) | 余儀ない事情で欠席する |
- 余儀ない事情により、本日は欠席させていただきます。よぎないじじょうにより、ほんじつはけっせきさせていただきます。For reasons beyond my control, I will be unable to attend today.
- 円高が輸出企業に生産拠点の移転を余儀なくさせた。えんだかがゆしゅつきぎょうにせいさんきょてんのいてんをよぎなくさせた。The strong yen forced exporters to relocate their production sites.
余儀なくされる, ざるを得ない or しかない?
〜ざるを得ない (N2) follows a verb and describes a constraint the subject acknowledges themselves: they “have no choice but to”, often after reflection. 〜しかない is more spoken: “all that's left is to”.
〜を余儀なくされる follows a noun and presents the constraint from outside, as an objective fact, without emotion. That's why the press prefers it: 中止を余儀なくされた is more neutral than 中止せざるを得なかった.
| Expression | Construction | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| 〜を余儀なくされる | action noun + を | external constraint, objective tone |
| 〜ざるを得ない | ない-form without ない + ざる | constraint acknowledged by the subject |
| 〜しかない | dictionary form + しか | “all that's left is to”, spoken |
- 雨がひどいので、今日の釣りは諦めるしかない。あめがひどいので、きょうのつりはあきらめるしかない。It's raining too hard; there's nothing for it but to give up on fishing today.
- これだけ証拠がそろえば、彼の主張を認めざるを得ない。これだけしょうこがそろえば、かれのしゅちょうをみとめざるをえない。With this much evidence, we have no choice but to concede he's right.
Common mistakes
- Putting a conjugated verb in front: “×中止するを余儀なくされた” is wrong; it's 中止を余儀なくされた.
- Mixing up the two voices: with passive される the subject is the one who suffers it; with causative させる it's the cause.
- Using it for a free decision: you need an external constraint; for a personal choice, you simply say 〜することにした.
