As for the extreme case of: 〜に至っては

Noun +

Noun + に至っては: after a series of cases, isolates the most extreme, usually negative (“as for X, it's even worse”). For a spoken complaint without a build-up, you say

In short

〜に至っては cites, after a series of cases, the most extreme of them: “and as for X, it's even worse”. It's almost always used to stress that a situation is bad, building up to the most striking case. Written and formal spoken style.

Every shop is raising its prices. As for the bakery by the station, it's done so three times in a year.
The exam went badly overall; as for Tanaka, he handed in a blank paper.
Young people keep leaving the region. In one village, more than half the residents are now over seventy.

The basics

〜に至っては works as a build-up: you first present a general trend (“everyone's late”, “prices are rising”), then highlight the most extreme case. In English: “as for X, …”, “X is even worse”.

The judgement is almost always negative or one of astonishment. The second part often describes an excess: 〜

Many employees are unhappy; among younger staff, half are reportedly even thinking of leaving.

How to form it

The typical structure has two stages: a general remark, then the extreme case introduced by に至っては.

StageRoleExample
1. General observationthe trend
3. Excesswhat's shocking
There were few participants, and on the second day there were only three.
My brother and sister are both bad cooks, but as for me, I can't even fry an egg.

に関しては is neutral: it simply introduces a topic (“as regards…”), with no idea of an extreme. にしては expresses a gap with expectations (“for a beginner, he plays well”).

ときたら is spoken and critical: you complain about someone or something you know well, without needing a series first. に至っては, by contrast, requires a build-up and belongs more to writing.

ExpressionNuanceExample
〜に至ってはthe extreme case in a series弟に至っては0点だった
As regards the costs, we'll get back to you at a later date.
My husband, honestly — he's never put away a single item of clothing in his life.

Common mistakes

  • Using it without a preceding series: に至っては assumes other, less serious cases have already been mentioned.
  • Confusing it with に至るまで (“right up to”, for a complete list): に至っては isolates one case; it doesn't take in everything.
  • Using it for neutral praise: it generally stresses an excess, a fault or a worrying situation.
