About, at most: 〜といったところだ

Noun / plain form + といったところだ(といったところか)

Noun/plain form + といったところだ: “about, at most”, a modest estimate (often with せいぜい). To soften it: 〜といったところか.

In short

〜といったところだ gives a rough, modest estimate: “it's about, at most”. It's used for a number, a level or a state that's nothing special (参加者は五十人といったところだ). Often accompanied by せいぜい or まあ. Everyday register, in writing as in speech.

  • 今日の参加者は、せいぜい五十人といったところだ。きょうのさんかしゃは、せいぜいごじゅうにんといったところだ。There are about fifty participants today, at most.
  • 私の日本語は、日常会話ができるといったところです。わたしのにほんごは、にちじょうかいわができるといったところです。My Japanese — let's say I can get by in everyday conversation.
  • 「調子はどう?」「まあまあといったところかな。」「ちょうしはどう?」「まあまあといったところかな。」“How's it going?” “So-so, I suppose.”

The basics

Literally, 〜といったところだ means “it's something like what you'd call…”. You give an estimate while staying deliberately cautious, and hinting that it isn't much — English “about”, “I'd say”, “at best”.

It's the ideal expression for a modest answer about your level, an unenthusiastic assessment or a figure that stays low.

How to form it

Add it to a noun (often a number or a level) or to a clause in the plain form. To soften it, end with か or かな: 〜といったところか. With です, it's the polite version. Don't confuse it with 〜といったところで (“even if one…”), a different structure.

といったところだ, くらいだ, 程度だ, ぐらいのものだ

〜くらいだ and 〜程度だ give a neutral approximation. 〜といったところだ adds the idea that it isn't much. 〜ぐらいのものだ means “there's hardly anyone but”: こんなことができるのは彼ぐらいのものだ (he's about the only one who could do this).

SentenceNuance
参加者は五十人くらいだabout fifty (neutral)
参加者は五十人程度だin the region of fifty (written)
参加者は五十人といったところだabout fifty, hardly more
来たのは彼ぐらいのものだhe was about the only one who came
  • 駅から歩いて十分程度の距離です。えきからあるいてじっぷんていどのきょりです。It's about ten minutes' walk from the station. (程度, neutral)

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a large number you're pleased about (“一万人も集まったといったところだ”): the expression plays things down.
  • Confusing it with 〜といったところで (“even if”): the particle で changes everything.
  • Thinking it's casual: it's used in writing as much as in speech, with です for politeness.
