Probably (written): 〜であろう

Noun / な-adj + であろう / plain form + であろう / であろう + noun

〜であろう: “no doubt”, the conjecture of written style (the equivalent of だろう). Also used before a noun (抱くであろう疑問) and in rhetorical questions (〜であろうか). Never with です.

In short

〜であろう is the written equivalent of だろう: “no doubt, probably”. It's the conjecture of essays, reports and editorials. It can also qualify a noun (多くの人が感じたであろう疑問) or pose a rhetorical question (〜であろうか). Written, formal register.

  • この問題は、今後ますます深刻になるであろう。このもんだいは、こんごますますしんこくになるであろう。This problem will no doubt become increasingly serious.
  • 百年後の人々は、この時代をどう評価するであろうか。ひゃくねんごのひとびとは、このじだいをどうひょうかするであろうか。How will people a hundred years from now judge our age?
  • 多くの読者が抱くであろう疑問に、ここで答えておきたい。おおくのどくしゃがいだくであろうぎもんに、ここでこたえておきたい。I'd like to answer here the question that many readers will no doubt be asking.

The basics

であろう is the conjectural form of である, the written copula. Where speech says だろう and politeness でしょう, argumentative writing says であろう. The meaning is the same: a reasoned supposition.

It adds distance, an author's caution: you put forward a hypothesis without asserting it — rather like English “it may well be that”, “one might suppose”.

How to form it

After a noun or a な-adjective, であろう replaces だろう directly. After a verb or an い-adjective, keep the plain form. Before a noun, であろう works like a relative clause (“that… no doubt”), which でしょう can't do.

BaseExampleSpoken equivalent
Noun + であろう最大の課題であろう最大の課題だろう
な-adj + であろう困難であろう困難だろう
Verb + であろう続くであろう続くだろう
い-adj + であろう難しいであろう難しいだろう
〜であろう + noun抱くであろう疑問(no equivalent with でしょう)
〜であろうかどう評価するであろうかどう評価するだろうか
  • 人口の減少は、この国にとって最大の課題であろう。じんこうのげんしょうは、このくににとってさいだいのかだいであろう。Population decline is probably this country's greatest challenge.
  • この計画の実現は、極めて困難であろうと思われる。このけいかくのじつげんは、きわめてこんなんであろうとおもわれる。Carrying out this plan looks set to be extremely difficult.

であろう, だろう, でしょう, と思われる

だろう is neutral (speech and plain writing), でしょう is polite and spoken, であろう is written and formal. 〜と思われる makes the supposition impersonal (“it seems that”) and is often combined with であろう. Note: registers don't mix; “であろうです” doesn't exist.

Don't confuse it with 〜であろうと(も), “whatever, no matter who”, which is a different construction (誰であろうと許さない).

FormRegisterExample
〜だろうneutral, casual speech明日は雨だろう
〜でしょうpolite, spoken明日は雨でしょう
〜であろうwritten, formal影響は大きいであろう
〜と思われるwritten, impersonal影響は大きいと思われる
  • 明日は全国的に雨でしょう。あしたはぜんこくてきにあめでしょう。Tomorrow there will be rain across the country. (weather forecast, polite spoken)
  • 相手が誰であろうと、不正は許さない。あいてがだれであろうと、ふせいはゆるさない。Whoever it may be, I won't tolerate fraud. (であろうと, a different meaning)

Common mistakes

  • Using it in conversation: in speech, であろう sounds pompous or theatrical. Say だろう or でしょう.
  • Combining it with です: “〜であろうです” is impossible; であろう belongs to the である style.
  • Confusing it with 〜であろうと (“no matter who/what”): the particle と changes the meaning.
