Even (classical): 〜とて

Noun + とて / verb in た + とて / だからとて

Noun + とて: “even, too” (私とて人間だ). V in た + とて: “even if” (謝ったとて許されない). だからとて = からといって. Written; what follows is often negative.

In short

〜とて is a classical particle corresponding to でも or ても. After a noun, “even”: 私とて人間だ (I'm only human too). After a verb in た, “even if”: 今さら謝ったとて許されない. だからとて is equivalent to からといって. The second half is often negative. Written, literary register.

  • 私とて人間だ。間違えることもある。わたしとてにんげんだ。まちがえることもある。I'm only human too. I make mistakes sometimes.
  • 今さら謝ったとて、許されるものではない。いまさらあやまったとて、ゆるされるものではない。Even if he apologises now, it's not something that can be forgiven.
  • 子どもだからとて、何をしてもいいわけではない。こどもだからとて、なにをしてもいいわけではない。Being a child doesn't mean you can do whatever you like.

The basics

とて comes from と + て (“even saying that”). It has taken on two values that remain alive in writing: “even” after a noun, and “even if” after a verb in the past.

After a noun, とて often signals that you're including someone who might be thought an exception: 私とて (me too, whatever people think), 先生とて (even a teacher) — English “even I”, “I'm only human”. What follows is often a concession or a negative.

The sentence, piece by piece
今さらnow (too late)
謝ったhave apologised (た-form)
とてeven if
許されるものではないit's not forgivable

Even if he apologises now, it's not something that can be forgiven.

  • other
  • verb
  • particle
  • 彼とて、最初から上手だったわけではない。かれとて、さいしょからじょうずだったわけではない。Even he wasn't good at it from the start.

How to form it

Three constructions to know. In every case, とて replaces a でも or a ても of modern Japanese.

ConstructionExampleModern equivalent
Noun + とて私とて人間だ私でも, 私だって
V in た + とて謝ったとて許されない謝っても許されない
〜だからとて子どもだからとて子どもだからといって
いくら〜たとていくら急いだとていくら急いでも
  • いくら頼んだとて、彼は聞き入れないだろう。いくらたのんだとて、かれはききいれないだろう。However much you beg him, he probably won't give in.
  • 金持ちだからとて、幸せとは限らない。かねもちだからとて、しあわせとはかぎらない。Being rich doesn't necessarily make you happy.

とて, でも, としても, たところで

でも (after a noun) and ても (after a verb) are the neutral modern forms. 〜としても sets up a hypothesis (“even supposing that”). 〜たところで (N2) stresses that an action is pointless (“there's no use…”). 〜とて covers these meanings with a literary tone. In casual speech, the equivalent of 私とて is 私だって.

SentenceRegister / nuance
私だって人間だcasual speech
私でも間違えるneutral
私とて人間だwritten, literary
今謝ったところで無駄だthere's no use apologising now
  • 今から行ったところで、もう誰もいないよ。いまからいったところで、もうだれもいないよ。There's no point going now; there's nobody left. (たところで)
  • 僕だって、たまには休みたいよ。ぼくだって、たまにはやすみたいよ。I'd like a break now and then too, you know! (spoken)

Common mistakes

  • Putting the verb in the dictionary form: you say 謝ったとて; the た-form is the rule.
  • Confusing とて with とは or と言って: it's a single particle of concession.
  • Using it in light conversation: in speech, say だって or ても.
