To deserve, be worthy of: 〜に値する
N / Verb (dictionary) + に値する/に値しない ; に値する + N
N / Verb + に値する: to deserve (being read, respected, considered). A formal, written value judgement; negative に値しない. For a price, you say 〜の価値がある.
In short
〜に値する (あたいする) says something or someone deserves a reaction, because they have the value for it: “worth reading”, “worthy of respect”. It's used mainly with Sino-Japanese action nouns (尊敬, 注目, 検討, 一読) or verbs like 読む, 見る. It's a serious value judgement, typical of writing, reviews and speeches.
- この本は一読に値する。このほんはいちどくにあたいする。This book is worth reading.
- 彼の努力は尊敬に値する。かれのどりょくはそんけいにあたいする。His efforts deserve respect.
- 根拠のない意見は、検討に値しない。こんきょのないいけんは、けんとうにあたいしない。An opinion with no basis isn't worth considering.
The basics
値 (あたい) means “value”. 〜に値する is “to have the value of…”, so “to deserve”. You're making a judgement: this thing, this person is worthy of a reaction (being read, respected, studied, admired).
The construction almost always goes with positive human reactions: 尊敬, 注目, 称賛, 信頼, 検討. In the negative, に値しない is used to dismiss bluntly.
His efforts deserve respect.
- noun
- particle
- verb
- 名古屋城の本丸御殿は、一度見るに値する。なごやじょうのほんまるごてんは、いちどみるにあたいする。The Honmaru Palace at Nagoya Castle is well worth a visit.
How to form it
Before に値する, put an action noun or a verb in the dictionary form. Negative: に値しない. Before a noun, it describes it directly: 尊敬に値する人物 (“a person worthy of respect”).
| Base | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action noun | N に値する | 注目に値する、一読に値する |
| Verb | 〜るに値する | 読むに値する、見るに値する |
| Negative | 〜に値しない | 検討に値しない |
| Before a noun | 〜に値する N | 信頼に値する人物 |
- 彼女は信頼に値する人物だ。かのじょはしんらいにあたいするじんぶつだ。She's a person worthy of trust.
- この研究結果は注目に値する。このけんきゅうけっかはちゅうもくにあたいする。These research findings deserve attention.
あたい, not ね; merit, not price
The kanji 値 is read ね in 値段 (“price”) and 値上げ (“price rise”), but あたい in に値する. And despite that link, に値する isn't used to say how much something costs: for a price or monetary value, you say 〜円する or 〜の価値がある.
- この絵には百万円の価値がある。このえにはひゃくまんえんのかちがある。This painting is worth a million yen. (価値がある: monetary value)
値する, 価値がある, べきだ, に足る
価値がある is the neutral, everyday word: it works for money as well as everything else (行く価値がある, “it's worth going”). に値する is more formal and more solemn. べきだ (N3) expresses a duty: 読むべきだ = “you should read it”. Finally, に足る (N1) is a very written cousin of に値する: 信頼に足る人物.
| Construction | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜に値する | deserves, formal judgement | 一読に値する |
| 〜価値がある | is worth it / is worth so much | 行く価値がある |
| 〜べきだ | should, duty | 読むべきだ |
| 〜に足る (N1) | worthy of, very written | 信頼に足る |
- あの店のひつまぶしは、並んでも食べる価値がある。あのみせのひつまぶしは、ならんでもたべるかちがある。The hitsumabushi at that restaurant is worth queuing for. (価値がある, everyday)
Common mistakes
- Reading it ね as in 値段: in に値する, it's あたい.
- Using it for a price in money (×百万円に値する絵): you say 百万円の価値がある.
- Using it in light conversation (このラーメンは食べるに値する): it sounds pompous; in speech, 〜価値がある is enough.
