From the point of view of: 〜にしたら・〜にすれば
N (person, group) + にしたら/にすれば/にしてみれば
N + にしたら/にすれば/にしてみれば: putting yourself in someone's shoes to imagine how they feel. Typical follow-up: だろう, かもしれない, a feeling.
In short
〜にしたら invites you to put yourself in someone else's shoes to imagine how they feel: “for him, from his point of view”. The sentence often ends in a supposition (だろう, かもしれない) or a feeling. にしてみれば stresses that empathy even more.
- 子どもにしたら、つまらない話だろう。こどもにしたら、つまらないはなしだろう。For a child, it's probably a boring story.
- 親にすれば、子どもはいつまでも子どもだ。おやにすれば、こどもはいつまでもこどもだ。To parents, a child is always a child.
- 急に仕事を頼まれた部下にしてみれば、迷惑な話だ。きゅうにしごとをたのまれたぶかにしてみれば、めいわくなはなしだ。For the subordinate who was handed this job at the last minute, it's a real nuisance.
The basics
The verb する here means “to take the position of”. 子どもにしたら is “if you put yourself in a child's shoes”. You imagine their feelings, often to show they differ from ours or other people's.
So it's used for another person or a group (children, parents, customers, residents), almost never for yourself.
For a child, it's probably a boring story.

How to form it
Name of a person or group + にしたら, にすれば or にしてみれば. The three are almost synonymous; にしてみれば is the most empathetic.
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N にしたら | for them, in their shoes | 子どもにしたら |
| N にすれば | same meaning, a bit more written | 親にすれば |
| N にしてみれば | if you really put yourself in their shoes | 部下にしてみれば |
- 学生にしたら、この値段は高いだろう。がくせいにしたら、このねだんはたかいだろう。For a student, this price must seem high.
- 犬にしてみれば、この暑さはつらいだろう。いぬにしてみれば、このあつさはつらいだろう。For a dog, this heat must be really hard.
Contrasting two points of view
Very often, two にしたら are set against each other to show that the same fact is experienced differently depending on where you stand.
- 観光客にしたら便利だが、住民にしたらうるさいだけだ。かんこうきゃくにしたらべんりだが、じゅうみんにしたらうるさいだけだ。It's convenient for tourists, but for residents, it's just noise.
にしたら, にとって, からすると, にしては
にとって (N3) gives the value of something for someone, with an evaluative adjective: 私にとって大切な人. にしたら imagines other people's feelings. からすると (N2) judges from a criterion or a position (専門家からすると). にしては (N3) marks a gap with what you'd expect: 十歳にしては, “for a ten-year-old, surprisingly…”.
| Construction | Idea | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N にしたら | putting yourself in someone's shoes | 子どもにしたらつまらない |
| N にとって | value for someone | 私にとって大切だ |
| N からすると | judgement from a point of view | 専門家からすると問題だ |
| N にしては | surprisingly, for a… | 十歳にしてはしっかりしている |
- 十歳にしては、しっかりした子だ。じゅっさいにしては、しっかりしたこだ。For a ten-year-old, she's very mature. (にしては)
Common mistakes
- Using it for yourself (私にしたら): you put yourself in other people's shoes. For yourself, you say 私としては.
- Mixing up にしたら (point of view), にしては (“surprisingly, for a…”) and にしても (“even if”).
- Translating it as “if one did”: here する doesn't mean “do” but “take the position of”.
