For a… (surprisingly): 〜にしては

Noun / plain form + にしては

Noun / plain form + にしては: “for a…, it's surprising”: reality doesn't match what you'd expect from the situation.

In short

〜にしては compares reality with what you'd normally expect from a specific situation: “for a…, it's surprisingly…”. 初めてにしては上手だ: “for a first try, it's well done”. The result is surprising, for better or worse.

  • 初めてにしては、とても上手ですね。はじめてにしては、とてもじょうずですね。For a first try, that's really good.
  • 京都の八月にしては、今日は涼しい。きょうとのはちがつにしては、きょうはすずしい。For August in Kyoto, it's cool today.
  • 十年も日本に住んでいるにしては、日本語があまり話せない。じゅうねんもにほんにすんでいるにしては、にほんごがあまりはなせない。For someone who's lived in Japan for ten years, he doesn't speak much Japanese.

The basics

You start from a known fact (it's the first time, it's a child, it's August) that leads you to expect a certain result. にしては announces that reality doesn't fit that expectation: it's better, or worse, than expected — English “for a…”, “considering it's…”.

So the sentence always contains a little surprise, and often a judgement: a compliment (初めてにしては上手) or a criticism (プロにしてはミスが多い).

  • grammatical form
  • adjective
  • あの人は、七十歳にしては若く見える。あのひとは、ななじゅっさいにしてはわかくみえる。For someone of seventy, he looks young.

How to form it

A noun goes straight before にしては (子どもにしては). A verb or an adjective goes in the plain form (勉強したにしては).

TypeFormExample
nounNoun + にしては初めてにしては
verbplain form + にしてはよく勉強したにしては
adjectiveplain form + にしては安いにしては
  • 三時間も勉強したにしては、点が低かった。さんじかんもべんきょうしたにしては、てんがひくかった。For someone who'd revised for three hours, the score was low.
  • 日曜日にしては、道が空いている。にちようびにしては、みちがすいている。For a Sunday, the roads are clear.

にしては, わりに, として

〜わりに (next point) is very close, but rather rests on a degree or quantity (値段のわりに, 年のわりに). にしては rests on a specific fact, a category, a status (初めて, 子ども, プロ).

〜として (“as”) presents a role, with no surprise at all: 先生として話す, “to speak as a teacher”. 先生にしては is “for a teacher, it's surprising”.

SentenceMeaning
プロとして恥ずかしくないworthy of a professional (role)
プロにしてはミスが多いfor a pro, lots of mistakes (surprise)
値段のわりにおいしいgood for the price (degree)
  • この店は、値段のわりに量が多い。このみせは、ねだんのわりにりょうがおおい。This restaurant serves big portions for the price.
  • ボランティアとして、祭りを手伝った。ぼらんてぃあとして、まつりをてつだった。I helped at the festival as a volunteer.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for an expected result: “プロにしては上手だ” is odd, since a pro is supposed to be good.
  • Mixing up にしては (surprising for a…) and にしても (even if, whatever the case).
  • Mixing up にしては and として: として contains no surprise; it gives a role.
