There's a risk that: 〜おそれがある

Verb (dictionary) / Noun + の + おそれがある

Verb (dictionary) / Noun + の + おそれがある: “there's a risk that” (always negative). Written, weather, news; in speech, かもしれない.

In short

〜おそれがある signals the risk that something unfortunate may happen: “there's a risk that, there's a danger of”. It's a written, formal phrasing, very common in weather forecasts, the news and official warnings.

  • 台風が近づいており、大雨のおそれがあります。たいふうがちかづいており、おおあめのおそれがあります。A typhoon is approaching, and there is a risk of heavy rain.
  • このままでは、川の水があふれるおそれがある。このままでは、かわのみずがあふれるおそれがある。If this continues, the river is in danger of overflowing.
  • この薬は、眠くなるおそれがあるので、運転前に飲まないでください。このくすりは、ねむくなるおそれがあるので、うんてんまえにのまないでください。This medicine may cause drowsiness, so do not take it before driving.

The basics

おそれ (恐れ, “fear”) + がある: “there's a fear that…”. You announce a possible danger objectively: a natural disaster, an accident, a side effect, a serious consequence — English “there's a risk of”, “may”, “is in danger of”.

It's the voice of weather bulletins, TV news, leaflets and signs. In everyday speech, you'd rather say 〜かもしれない.

How to form it

Verb in the dictionary form (or the ない-form) + おそれがある. Noun + の + おそれがある. おそれ is often written in kana. Variants: おそれはない (no risk), おそれもある (there's also a risk), and before a noun: 〜おそれのある + noun.

ConstructionExampleMeaning

  • 風邪が悪くなるおそれがあるから、今日は休んだほうがいい。かぜがわるくなるおそれがあるから、きょうはやすんだほうがいい。Your cold could get worse, so you'd better rest today.

おそれがある or かもしれない?

かもしれない expresses any possibility, good or bad, and is used everywhere. おそれがある is only for a negative risk and sounds official, objective. You don't say “合格するおそれがある” (“there's a risk I'll pass”): it's absurd, except as a joke.

Nor is it a personal fear: for “I'm afraid of earthquakes”, you say 地震が怖い.

  • 明日は雪が降るかもしれない。あしたはゆきがふるかもしれない。It might snow tomorrow.
  • 明日は雪が降るおそれがあります。交通情報に注意してください。あしたはゆきがふるおそれがあります。こうつうじょうほうにちゅういしてください。Snow is forecast for tomorrow. Please keep an eye on travel updates.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a positive event: おそれがある always announces a danger or an unwelcome consequence.
  • Forgetting の after a noun: 大雨のおそれ, not “大雨おそれ”.
  • Mixing it up with personal fear: “I'm afraid of…” is 〜が怖い or 〜が心配だ.
