Right in the middle of: 〜最中に
Verb in ている / Noun + の + 最中に / 最中だ
Verb in ている / Noun + の + 最中に: “right in the middle of” an activity, often interrupted by something awkward. 最中だ: to be right in the thick of it.
In short
〜最中に means “right in the middle of”: an action is under way, at its busiest point, and something interrupts it, often awkwardly. 食事の最中に電話が鳴った, “the phone rang right in the middle of the meal”. 〜最中だ simply says you're right in the thick of it.
- 食事の最中に、電話が鳴った。しょくじのさいちゅうに、でんわがなった。The phone rang right in the middle of the meal.
- 試合の最中に、雨が降り出した。しあいのさいちゅうに、あめがふりだした。It started raining in the middle of the match.
- 今、どうするか考えている最中だ。いま、どうするかかんがえているさいちゅうだ。I'm just in the middle of thinking about what to do.
The basics
最中 (さいちゅう) means “the very heart of an action”. 〜最中に places an event right in the middle of an activity in full swing: a meal, a meeting, a match, a conversation. The event is usually unexpected and disruptive — English “right in the middle of”, “in the thick of”.
It started raining in the middle of the match.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- お茶会の最中に、子どもが泣き出した。おちゃかいのさいちゅうに、こどもがなきだした。Right in the middle of the tea ceremony, a child burst into tears.
- 大事な話をしている最中に、邪魔をしないで。だいじなはなしをしているさいちゅうに、じゃまをしないで。Don't disturb us in the middle of an important conversation.
How to form it
With a verb, always the ている-form. With an activity noun, の. At the end of a sentence, 〜最中だ (“I'm right in the middle of it”), often to explain that you're busy.
| Base | Formation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verb | 〜ている + 最中に | 話している最中に |
| activity noun | 〜の + 最中に | 会議の最中に |
| end of sentence | 〜最中だ | 今、用意している最中だ |
- 今、晩ご飯を作っている最中だから、あとで電話するね。いま、ばんごはんをつくっているさいちゅうだから、あとででんわするね。I'm in the middle of making dinner, so I'll call you back later.
- 工事の最中なので、この道は通れません。こうじのさいちゅうなので、このみちはとおれません。Roadworks are under way, so this road is closed.
最中に, 間に, ているところに
間に places an event anywhere within a period, without emphasis. 最中に stresses that it was the worst moment, right in the middle of the action. 〜ているところに / ところへ (“just as”) is close, but often for a visit or an arrival: 出かけようとしているところに、友達が来た.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 会議の間に電話があった | a call during the meeting (neutral) |
| 会議の最中に電話が鳴った | right in the middle of the meeting (awkward) |
| 出かけるところに友達が来た | just as I was leaving |
- 出かけようとしているところに、友達が来た。でかけようとしているところに、ともだちがきた。A friend turned up just as I was about to go out.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a state: 「元気な最中に」, 「住んでいる最中に」 are wrong; 最中 needs an activity in progress.
- Attaching 最中 to the dictionary form: 「話す最中に」 is wrong; it's 話している最中に.
- Forgetting の after a noun: 食事最中 isn't natural in speech; say 食事の最中.
