Not until: 〜てからでないと・〜てからでなければ

Verb in て + からでないと〜ない

Verb in て + からでないと / からでなければ + negative: “not until, you must first”, a compulsory precondition.

In short

〜てからでないと〜ない says something is only possible after something else: 予約してからでないと入れない, “you can't get in without booking first”. Literally: “if it's not after booking, you can't get in”. The sentence almost always ends with a negative form or an idea of impossibility.

  • このお寺は、予約してからでないと入れない。このおてらは、よやくしてからでないとはいれない。You can't get into this temple without booking first.
  • 親に相談してからでないと、決められません。おやにそうだんしてからでないと、きめられません。I can't decide until I've talked it over with my parents.
  • 実際に見てからでなければ、何とも言えない。じっさいにみてからでなければ、なんともいえない。Until I've seen it with my own eyes, I can't say anything.

The basics

〜てから (N5) means “after doing”. でないと (でない, the negative of だ, followed by と: “if it isn't”) adds the condition: if it isn't after X, then Y isn't possible. This expresses a compulsory precondition: X first, otherwise nothing — English “not until”, “only after”, “unless… first”.

  • 仕事が終わってからでないと、行けないよ。しごとがおわってからでないと、いけないよ。I can't come until I've finished work.

How to form it

Verb in て + からでないと or からでなければ (more formal, more written). The ending is negative: a negative potential, 〜てはいけない, 〜ない, or a word like 無理, 難しい.

てから, ないと, てからでないと

〜てから just gives the order: 予約してから行く, “I'll go after booking”. 〜ないと〜ない (N4) says “if you don't do X, Y isn't possible”: 予約しないと入れない. 〜てからでないと stresses the compulsory order: X has to come before Y, not after.

SentenceMeaning
予約してから行くI'll go after booking (order)
予約しないと入れないwithout a booking, you can't get in
予約してからでないと入れないyou can only get in once you've booked
  • チケットを買ってから、中に入ってください。ちけっとをかってから、なかにはいってください。Please go in after buying your ticket.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the final negative: 「予約してからでないと入れる」 makes no sense; the ending must be negative.
  • Taking でないと for “not”: the meaning is positive, “you must do X first”.
  • Mixing it up with てからでも (“even after”): 「てからでも遅くない」 means “it's not too late, even after”.
