I nearly…: 〜ところだった
Verb (dictionary) + ところだった
Verb (dictionary) + ところだった: “I nearly…”, something narrowly avoided. Often with もう少しで, あぶなく, or 〜なかったら.
In short
〜ところだった means “I nearly…”, “I almost…”: something (often unfortunate) was about to happen, but it didn't. It comes with もう少しで, あぶなく or 〜たら (“if…”). もう少しで電車に乗り遅れるところだった, “I very nearly missed the train”.
- もう少しで電車に乗り遅れるところだった。もうすこしででんしゃにのりおくれるところだった。I very nearly missed the train.
- 危なく車にぶつかるところだった。あぶなくくるまにぶつかるところだった。I almost crashed into a car.
- 君が教えてくれなかったら、約束を忘れるところだった。きみがおしえてくれなかったら、やくそくをわすれるところだった。If you hadn't reminded me, I'd have forgotten the appointment.
The basics
ところ, with the dictionary form, refers to the moment just before an action (行くところだ, “I'm about to go”, N4). Put into the past, 〜ところだった says you were about to do it… and in the end, it didn't happen. It's English “I nearly…”, “I almost…”, “I'd have…”.
I nearly missed the train.
- other
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 大事なメールを消してしまうところだった。だいじなめーるをけしてしまうところだった。I nearly deleted an important email.
- 地図がなかったら、道に迷うところだった。ちずがなかったら、みちにまようところだった。Without the map, I'd have got lost.
How to form it
Verb in the dictionary form + ところだった. A word stressing the near miss is often added: もう少しで, あぶなく, あやうく (written), or a condition 〜たら / 〜なかったら.
| Supporting word | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| もう少しで | very nearly | もう少しで落ちるところだった |
| あぶなく / あやうく | a narrow escape, danger | 危なく事故に遭うところだった |
| 〜なかったら | without such-and-such | 君がいなかったら、負けるところだった |
- 君がいなかったら、試合に負けるところだった。きみがいなかったら、しあいにまけるところだった。Without you, we'd have lost the match.
- 危うく大切な約束を忘れるところでした。あやうくたいせつなやくそくをわすれるところでした。I came close to forgetting an important appointment.
ところだった, ところだ, たところだ
Three very similar forms, three meanings. 〜るところだ: I'm about to. 〜たところだ: I've just. 〜るところだった: I nearly (it didn't happen). Look carefully at the verb form and the tense of だ.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜るところだ | be about to | 今、出かけるところだ |
| 〜たところだ | have just done | 今、帰ったところだ |
| 〜るところだった | nearly did | 電車に乗り遅れるところだった |
- 今、家に着いたところだ。いま、いえについたところだ。I've just got home.
Common mistakes
- Putting the verb in the past: 「乗り遅れたところだった」 is wrong; it's 乗り遅れるところだった.
- Thinking the action happened: with ところだった, it was narrowly avoided.
- Mixing it up with たところだ (“have just”): only the dictionary form + ところだった means “I nearly”.
