Can't help doing: 〜ずにはいられない
Verb ない-form without ない + ずにはいられない(する→せずには)
ない-form without ない + ずにはいられない: “I can't help…”, an irresistible action driven by emotion. Spoken: 〜ないではいられない.
In short
〜ずにはいられない says an action forces itself on you: you can't help doing it. “It's so cute I can't help taking a photo.” It's a double negative: “I can't stay without doing it”, so “I have to do it”. A slightly more spoken version exists: 〜ないではいられない.
- あまりにかわいくて、写真を撮らずにはいられない。あまりにかわいくて、しゃしんをとらずにはいられない。It's so cute I can't help taking a photo.
- その話を聞いて、笑わずにはいられなかった。そのはなしをきいて、わらわずにはいられなかった。When I heard that story, I couldn't help laughing.
- 京都のお菓子を見ると、買わずにはいられない。きょうとのおかしをみると、かわずにはいられない。Whenever I see Kyoto sweets, I just can't resist buying some.
The basics
Let's break it down: 〜ずに (“without doing”) + は (emphasis) + いられない (“can't stay”). “I can't stay without doing it.” Two negatives cancel out: in the end, you do the action, driven by something stronger than you — English “can't help …ing”, “can't resist …ing”.
It's too cute — I can't help taking a photo.
- adjective
- noun

How to form it
Same base as 〜ずに: ない-form without ない, then ずにはいられない. する becomes せずには. In the past: ずにはいられなかった.
| Verb | 〜ずにはいられない | Spoken version |
|---|---|---|
| 笑う | 笑わずにはいられない | 笑わないではいられない |
| 買う | 買わずにはいられない | 買わないではいられない |
| 言う | 言わずにはいられない | 言わないではいられない |
| 注意する | 注意せずにはいられない | 注意しないではいられない |
- 一言言わずにはいられなかった。ひとこといわずにはいられなかった。I just had to say something.
An action, for yourself
This point is about an action (laughing, buying, saying, helping), triggered by an emotion. It's about the speaker; for someone else, add ようだ or らしい.
- あの映画を見て、泣かずにはいられなかった。あのえいがをみて、なかずにはいられなかった。Watching that film, I couldn't hold back my tears.
- 母は、私の顔を見ると何か言わずにはいられないようだ。はははわたしのかおをみるとなにかいわずにはいられないようだ。Whenever my mother sees me, she can't seem to help making some remark.
ずにはいられない or てたまらない?
てたまらない describes an unbearable feeling (会いたくてたまらない). ずにはいられない describes the action that feeling triggers (会いに行かずにはいられない). The two often go together: 会いたくてたまらなくて、会いに行かずにはいられなかった.
| Form | About | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜てたまらない | a feeling | 会いたくてたまらない |
| 〜ずにはいられない | an action | 会いに行かずにはいられない |
- 会いたくてたまらなくて、会いに行かずにはいられなかった。あいたくてたまらなくて、あいにいかずにはいられなかった。I wanted to see him so badly I couldn't help going to find him.
Common mistakes
- Understanding it as “I can't do it”: the double negative gives the opposite, “I can't help doing it”.
- Saying しずには: with する, it's せずには.
- Using it for a feeling with no action: 「うれしくてたまらない」 yes, 「うれしがらずにはいられない」 no.
