Precisely because: 〜ばこそ
Verb in ば + こそ / adjective in ければ + こそ / noun + であればこそ
V in ば/〜であれば + こそ: “it's precisely because”, an emphasised cause, often to justify an attitude. The formal version of 〜からこそ; it isn't a condition.
In short
〜ばこそ has the form of a condition but the meaning of an emphasised cause: “it's precisely because”. It's used to justify an attitude by revealing the real reason, often a noble one (あなたを思えばこそ厳しく言うのだ). The sentence often ends with のだ. Written, formal register.
- あなたのことを思えばこそ、厳しいことを言うのです。あなたのことをおもえばこそ、きびしいことをいうのです。It's precisely because I care about you that I'm telling you hard things.
- 健康であればこそ、好きな仕事も続けられるのだ。けんこうであればこそ、すきなしごともつづけられるのだ。It's because you're healthy that you can keep doing the work you love.
- 家族がいればこそ、つらい時も頑張れた。かぞくがいればこそ、つらいときもがんばれた。It was thanks to my family that I could keep going through the hard times.
The basics
In classical Japanese, the ば-form attached to what's called the “realis” form of the verb expressed a cause (“since”), not a condition. 〜ばこそ keeps that old meaning, reinforced by こそ (“precisely, exactly”).
It's used to reveal the real motivation behind an attitude that might be misunderstood: strictness comes from affection, demands come from trust — like English “it's only because… that”, “I'm being cruel to be kind”.
It's precisely because I care about you that I'm telling you hard things.
- noun
- verb
- particle
- 平和であればこそ、文化も育つのだ。へいわであればこそ、ぶんかもそだつのだ。It's because there's peace that culture can flourish.
How to form it
Verb in the ば-form + こそ; い-adjective in ければ + こそ; noun or な-adjective + であればこそ. The second half often ends with のだ or のです, which underline the explanation.
| Base | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | V in ば + こそ | 思えばこそ, いればこそ |
| い-adjective | 〜ければこそ | 若ければこそ |
| な-adjective | 〜であればこそ | 健康であればこそ |
| Noun | 〜であればこそ | 親であればこそ |
- 若ければこそ、こんな無茶もできるのだ。わかければこそ、こんなむちゃもできるのだ。It's because you're young that you can do crazy things like this.
- 親であればこそ、子どもの将来を心配するのです。おやであればこそ、こどものしょうらいをしんぱいするのです。It's precisely because you're a parent that you worry about your children's future.
ばこそ, からこそ, ので
〜からこそ (N2) has the same meaning and is used everywhere, in speech and in writing. 〜ばこそ is more literary and solemn. 〜ので gives a neutral cause, without emphasising it.
The main trap is reading 〜ばこそ as a condition (“if…”): the situation is real, not a hypothesis.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| あなたを思うので、厳しく言う | neutral cause |
| あなたを思うからこそ、厳しく言う | precisely because (everyday) |
| あなたを思えばこそ、厳しく言う | precisely because (formal) |
| あなたを思えば、厳しく言える | if I think of you (condition, a different meaning) |
- 雨が降ったので、試合は中止になった。あめがふったので、しあいはちゅうしになった。The match was called off because it rained. (neutral cause: ばこそ wouldn't fit)
- 仲間がいたからこそ、最後までやり遂げられた。なかまがいたからこそ、さいごまでやりとげられた。It was because I had my teammates that I could see it through to the end. (everyday)
Common mistakes
- Translating it as “if”: 〜ばこそ expresses a real cause, “it's precisely because”.
- Forgetting であれば with a noun: you say 親であればこそ, not “親ばこそ”.
- Using it for a mundane or negative cause (“雨が降ればこそ遅れた”): it's for revealing a deep motivation, often a positive one. For a simple reason, ので will do.
