Once… there's no going back: 〜が最後/〜たら最後
動詞た形 + が最後/たら最後
Verb in た + が最後 / たら最後: “once X has happened, there's no going back”, followed by an extreme, unavoidable consequence. たら最後 is more common, が最後 more written.
In short
〜が最後 / 〜たら最後 says “once X has happened, there's no going back”, and what follows is an excessive, unfortunate and unavoidable consequence: 一度寝たら最後、何があっても起きない. たら最後 is more common in speech, が最後 more written.
- 父は一度寝たら最後、何があっても起きない。ちちはいちどねたらさいご、なにがあってもおきない。Once my father's asleep, nothing in the world will wake him.
- この店に入ったが最後、何か買わないと出してもらえない。このみせにはいったがさいご、なにかかわないとだしてもらえない。Once you've set foot in this shop, they won't let you out without buying something.
- 彼にお金を貸したら最後、二度と戻ってこないよ。かれにおかねをかしたらさいご、にどともどってこないよ。Lend him money and you'll never see it again.
The basics
最後 means “the end”. 〜たが最後: “having done X, that's the end”. The action is a point of no return, and what follows can no longer be stopped — think of “once you pop, you can't stop”.
What follows is always an extreme consequence, often a negative one: you can't stop any more, you can't escape, all is lost. The tone is often exasperated or half amused.
Once my father's asleep, nothing in the world will wake him.

- この沼にはまったら最後、二度と出られない。このぬまにはまったらさいご、にどとでられない。Fall into this swamp and you never get out.

How to form it
Verb in the た-form + が最後, or the たら-form + 最後. The meaning is the same; only the register changes.
| Form | Construction | Register |
|---|---|---|
| 〜たが最後 | 入った + が最後 | more written, more dramatic |
| 〜たら最後 | 入ったら + 最後 | more common, in speech and writing alike |
- この業界では、一度信用を失ったが最後、やり直すのは難しい。このぎょうかいでは、いちどしんようをうしなったがさいご、やりなおすのはむずかしい。In this industry, once you've lost people's trust, it's very hard to start over.
が最後, たら, ようものなら, ばそれまで
〜たら (a simple condition) carries no nuance: 寝たら起きない. が最後 adds “and it's irreversible”.
〜ようものなら (N1) imagines a risky action you'd advise against (“if you so much as…, watch out”). が最後 rather describes what's sure to happen, often a habit.
〜ばそれまでだ (N1) concludes “all is lost”: 死んでしまえばそれまでだ. が最後, on the other hand, introduces something that doesn't stop.
- 部長に口答えしようものなら、大変なことになる。ぶちょうにくちごたえしようものなら、たいへんなことになる。If you so much as talk back to the manager, you'll be in serious trouble.
- どんなにいい計画でも、実行しなければそれまでだ。どんなにいいけいかくでも、じっこうしなければそれまでだ。Even the best plan in the world is worthless if you don't carry it out.
Common mistakes
- Using it for a happy outcome: “×合格したが最後、幸せになれる” doesn't work; the consequence is excessive or unfortunate.
- Taking it for “the last time”: 最後 isn't about a last chance here, but a point of no return.
- Using the dictionary form (“×入るが最後”): you need the た-form.
