Never did, in the end: 〜ずじまい

動詞ない形 + ずじまい

Verb in ない without ない + ずじまい (する → せずじまい): “in the end, it never happened”. A final verdict, tinged with regret.

In short

〜ずじまい says that something you wanted to do, or should have done, never got done in the end, and the chance has gone: 結局彼女には会えずじまいだった. There's a feeling of regret or disappointment. It's a final verdict, so it's almost always in the past.

  • 結局、彼女には会えずじまいだった。けっきょく、かのじょにはあえずじまいだった。In the end, I never got to see her.
  • 旅行中は忙しくて、楽しみにしていた温泉にも行かずじまいだった。りょこうちゅうはいそがしくて、たのしみにしていたおんせんにもいかずじまいだった。I was so busy on the trip that I never even made it to the hot springs I'd been looking forward to.
  • 買ったまま読まずじまいの本が、本棚に並んでいる。かったままよまずじまいのほんが、ほんだなにならんでいる。My shelf is lined with books I bought and never read.

The basics

ず is the written negative (= ない), and じまい comes from しまい, “the end”. 〜ずじまい: “to end up without having done”. You look back and note that the expected action never took place.

The sentence often carries 結局, とうとう or ついに, which underline this final verdict. The tone is one of regret or disappointment — English “never got round to it”, “never did, in the end”.

How to form it

Verb in the ない-form, without ない, + ずじまい. する becomes せず. Then だ / だった, の + noun, or で to link on.

行く行かない行かずじまい
会える会えない会えずじまい
見る見ない見ずじまい
するしないせずじまい
来る来ない来ずじまい(こずじまい)
  • 準備もせずじまいで、試験の日を迎えてしまった。じゅんびもせずじまいで、しけんのひをむかえてしまった。Without having prepared anything, I found myself on the day of the exam.

ずじまい, ないで終わる, ないまま

〜ないで終わる says the same thing neutrally, with no particular colouring. 〜ずじまい adds regret over the missed opportunity.

〜ないまま stresses an ongoing state (分からないまま時間が過ぎた). ずじまい closes the file: it's over, it won't be done now.

For a future plan, you can't say ずじまい: “×明日は行かずじまいだ” is impossible.

  • 理由が分からないまま、時間だけが過ぎていった。りゆうがわからないまま、じかんだけがすぎていった。Time went by without my understanding why.
  • あの店には、とうとう行かずじまいだった。あのみせには、とうとういかずじまいだった。That restaurant — in the end I never did go.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for the future: ずじまい is a verdict; it looks back at the past.
  • Writing “×しずじまい”: for する, it's せずじまい.
  • Adding ない or に: “×行かないじまい” and “×行かずにじまい” don't exist.
