Have a (bad) tendency to: 〜きらいがある

動詞辞書形・名詞の + きらいがある

Verb or noun の + きらいがある: “to have an unfortunate tendency to”. Measured criticism of a habitual flaw in someone else; not to be confused with 嫌い (“to hate”).

In short

〜きらいがある means “to have an (unfortunate) tendency to”. It's used to point out a character flaw or a questionable habit in a person, a group, an institution. The tone is one of measured, composed criticism, rather written or in formal speech.

  • 彼は物事を大げさに言うきらいがある。かれはものごとをおおげさにいうきらいがある。He has an unfortunate tendency to exaggerate.
  • この新聞は結論を急ぎすぎるきらいがある。このしんぶんはけつろんをいそぎすぎるきらいがある。This newspaper tends to jump to conclusions.
  • 日本の会社は、前例のないことを避けるきらいがある。にほんのかいしゃは、ぜんれいのないことをさけるきらいがある。Japanese companies tend to shy away from anything without precedent.

The basics

きらい does come from 嫌い (“what one dislikes”), but in this expression it has taken on the meaning “unfortunate leaning”. 〜きらいがある = “he has this leaning”. You note a flaw, without getting worked up — like English “to be prone to”, “to have a habit of”.

The subject is a person, a group or an institution, and the verb describes habitual behaviour, almost a character trait.

How to form it

Verb in the dictionary form (or in ない), or noun + の, then きらいがある. It's usually written in hiragana, precisely to avoid confusion with 嫌い.

BaseConstructionExample
verbdictionary + きらいがある考えすぎるきらいがある
negative verbない + きらいがある人の話を聞かないきらいがある
nounnoun + の + きらいがある独断のきらいがある
  • 彼は自分の失敗を人のせいにするきらいがある。かれはじぶんのしっぱいをひとのせいにするきらいがある。He tends to blame his own mistakes on others.
  • この報告書は、見通しが甘すぎるきらいがある。このほうこくしょは、みとおしがあますぎるきらいがある。This report errs on the side of over-optimism.

きらいがある, がちだ, 傾向がある

〜がちだ (N3) says something happens often, without judging character: 冬は風邪をひきがちだ. It can be used about yourself. 〜傾向がある is neutral, almost statistical (若者の読書量は減る傾向がある). 〜きらいがある judges a flaw, in someone else.

To use きらいがある about yourself, you need a genuinely self-critical tone (私は考えすぎるきらいがある); it's possible but rare.

ExpressionWhat's being saidExample
〜きらいがあるa character flaw (critical)人の話を聞かないきらいがある
〜がちだit happens often (often despite oneself)休みの日は寝坊しがちだ
〜傾向があるan observed tendency (neutral)出生数は減る傾向がある
  • 休みの日は、つい寝坊しがちだ。やすみのひは、ついねぼうしがちだ。On days off, I tend to oversleep.
  • 近年、結婚する年齢は上がる傾向がある。きんねん、けっこんするねんれいはあがるけいこうがある。In recent years, the age at which people marry has tended to rise.

Common mistakes

  • Reading it as “hate”: 彼は大げさに言うきらいがある doesn't say he hates exaggerating, but that he often exaggerates.
  • Using it for a positive tendency: “×彼は人を助けるきらいがある” is absurd; the expression is always critical.
  • Using it for a one-off fact or a neutral frequency: for “it often rains in June”, it's 雨が降りがちだ, not きらいがある.
