I'll just have to: 〜までだ/〜までのことだ
Verb (dictionary) + までだ / Verb in た + までだ(までのことだ)
V (dictionary) + までだ: “I'll just…”, a resolute decision. V in た + までだ/までのことだ: “I only…”, a justification. Firm tone.
In short
〜までだ has two uses depending on the verb form. With the dictionary form, it's a resolute decision: “if that doesn't work, well, I'll just do this, that's all”. With the た-form, it's a justification: “I only did that, nothing more”. 〜までのことだ reinforces either one. Careful spoken and written register.
- 電車が止まっているなら、歩いて帰るまでだ。でんしゃがとまっているなら、あるいてかえるまでだ。If the trains have stopped, well, I'll just walk home, that's all.
- 別に責めたわけではない。本当のことを言ったまでだ。べつにせめたわけではない。ほんとうのことをいったまでだ。I wasn't accusing you. I was only telling the truth.
- お礼には及びません。当然のことをしたまでです。おれいにはおよびません。とうぜんのことをしたまでです。There's no need to thank me; I only did what anyone would.
The basics
まで means “up to”: 〜までだ literally says “we'll go that far, no further”. Hence two uses: a drastic solution you're ready to adopt (“all that's left is to…”), and a past action you play down (“I only…”).
In both cases the tone is firm. You settle the matter and don't make a fuss — English “I'll just have to”, “I was only…”.
If the trains have stopped, well, I'll just walk home, that's all.

Two forms, two meanings
Everything hinges on the verb form. The dictionary form looks to the future (a decision), the た-form to the past (a justification). The polite version is 〜までです.
| Construction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V (dictionary) + までだ | all that's left is to, I'll do it without hesitation | 歩いて帰るまでだ |
| V (dictionary) + までのことだ | same meaning, more emphatic | やり直すまでのことだ |
| V in た + までだ | I only, nothing more | 本当のことを言ったまでだ |
| V in た + までのことです | polite, modest justification | 当然のことをしたまでのことです |
- 失敗したら、もう一度挑戦するまでのことだ。しっぱいしたら、もういちどちょうせんするまでのことだ。If I fail, I'll simply try again.
- 私はただ規則に従ったまでです。わたしはただきそくにしたがったまでです。I was only following the rules.
- 気に入らないなら、こちらから断るまでだ。きにいらないなら、こちらからことわるまでだ。If they don't like it, well, I'll just turn them down myself, that's all.
までだ, しかない, それまでだ, だけだ
〜しかない expresses resignation (“no choice”); 〜までだ, resolve (“no matter, I'll just…”). 〜ばそれまでだ is a different structure: “if…, that's the end, all is lost” (死んでしまえばそれまでだ). Finally, 〜ただけだ describes a factual limit, without the defensive tone of 〜たまでだ.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 歩いて帰るしかない | I have no choice but to walk home (resigned) |
| 歩いて帰るまでだ | I'll walk home — so what? (resolute) |
| けがをすればそれまでだ | if I get injured, it's all over |
| 言っただけだ | I only said it (a plain statement) |
- どんなに準備しても、当日熱を出せばそれまでだ。どんなにじゅんびしても、とうじつねつをだせばそれまでだ。However well you prepare, if you come down with a fever on the day, it's all ruined. (〜ばそれまでだ)
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the two forms: 帰るまでだ (I'll go home) isn't 帰ったまでだ (I only went home).
- Taking it as temporal “until”: here まで marks a limit on commitment, not a point in time.
- Forgetting the tone: the た-form can sound curt or defensive; to accept thanks modestly, 当然のことをしたまでです is the set formula.
