Either… or: 〜なり〜なり

名詞・動詞辞書形 + なり + 〜なり

A なり B なり: “A or B, your choice, it doesn't matter”, for suggesting or requesting an action. Not for narrating; don't confuse it with なり “as soon as”.

In short

〜なり〜なり suggests two possibilities among others: “A or B, it doesn't matter, but do something”: 電話なりメールなりで連絡してください. It's used to suggest, advise or ask. The examples given are only indicative. Everyday register, mostly addressed to an equal or a subordinate.

  • 電話なりメールなりで連絡してください。でんわなりめーるなりでれんらくしてください。Get in touch by phone or email, whichever suits you.
  • 分からないことがあれば、先生に聞くなり辞書で調べるなりしなさい。わからないことがあれば、せんせいにきくなりじしょでしらべるなりしなさい。If there's something you don't understand, ask the teacher or look it up in the dictionary.
  • 煮るなり焼くなり、好きにしてくれ。にるなりやくなり、すきにしてくれ。Do with me as you please.

The basics

なり here is a listing particle. You cite two options, but the idea is “any of them, as long as you act” — English “… or something”, “whichever”. The sentence almost always ends with a request, a piece of advice or a suggestion: してください, しなさい, したらどう, したほうがいい.

This nuance of open choice sets it apart from 〜たり〜たり (description) and 〜とか〜とか (examples).

  • verb
  • 困ったときは、親なり友達なりに相談したほうがいい。こまったときは、おやなりともだちなりにそうだんしたほうがいい。When you're in trouble, it's best to talk to your parents or a friend.
  • 結論を出す前に、本を読むなり専門家に聞くなりしてみたらどうですか。けつろんをだすまえに、ほんをよむなりせんもんかにきくなりしてみたらどうですか。Before drawing a conclusion, why not read a book or ask an expert?

How to form it

Noun + なり + noun + なり, then the particle you need (で, に…). Dictionary form + なり + verb + なり, then する. You can also cite just one: 何なりと (“anything at all”) is a polite formula.

BaseConstructionExample
nounA なり B なり + particle電話なりメールなりで
verbA なり B なり + する聞くなり調べるなりする
set phrase何なりと何なりとお申し付けください
  • ご用がありましたら、何なりとお申し付けください。ごようがありましたら、なんなりとおもうしつけください。If there's anything at all you need, please don't hesitate to ask.

なり〜なり, か〜か, たり〜たり, and the other なり

〜か〜か presents a real choice between two options. 〜たり〜たり describes actions done (including in the past). 〜なり〜なり offers examples of actions to be done, so it can't be used to recount the past.

Don't confuse it with verb + なり (“as soon as”, N1: 家に帰るなり寝た) or with 〜なりに (“in one's own way”: 私なりに頑張った).

  • 彼は家に帰るなり、ベッドに倒れ込んだ。かれはいえにかえるなり、べっどにたおれこんだ。The moment he got home, he collapsed onto his bed.
  • 私なりに精一杯頑張りました。わたしなりにせいいっぱいがんばりました。I did my very best, in my own way.

Common mistakes

  • Recounting the past with なり〜なり: “×昨日は映画を見るなり買い物をするなりした”; you say 見たり買い物をしたりした.
  • Using it to a superior without softening: 〜なり〜なりしてください can sound bossy.
  • Confusing it with なり “as soon as” or なりに “in one's own way”.
