A and B alike, everywhere: 〜といわず〜といわず
名詞 + といわず + 名詞 + といわず
Noun + といわず + noun + といわず: “without distinction, everywhere, all the time”. A concrete pair stands for the whole; it's an observation, not an evaluation.
In short
〜といわず〜といわず means “making no distinction between A and B, everywhere, all the time”. You cite a pair (day and night, face and hands, weekdays and weekends) to say that the state described extends to everything: 昼といわず夜といわず働く (to work day and night). It's a concrete description, not a judgement. Written register.
- 彼は昼といわず夜といわず、研究に打ち込んでいる。かれはひるといわずよるといわず、けんきゅうにうちこんでいる。He devotes himself to his research day and night.
- 子どもたちは、顔といわず手といわず泥だらけだった。こどもたちは、かおといわずてといわずどろだらけだった。The children were covered in mud, faces and hands alike.
- 部屋は、机の上といわず床の上といわず、本であふれていた。へやは、つくえのうえといわずゆかのうえといわず、ほんであふれていた。The room was overflowing with books, on the desk and on the floor alike.
The basics
といわず comes from と言わず (“without saying, without distinguishing”). 〜といわず〜といわず: “whether it's A or B, it doesn't matter”. With two examples from a pair, you're really referring to the whole: 昼と夜 means “all the time”; 顔と手, “the whole body”.
The sentence observes a concrete state: the action or the dirt extends everywhere, without exception — English “inside and out”, “day and night”, “from head to toe”.
He devotes himself to his research day and night.
- noun
- grammatical form
- verb
- 夏になると、家の中といわず外といわず、虫が飛んでいる。なつになると、いえのなかといわずそとといわず、むしがとんでいる。In summer there are insects flying everywhere, indoors and out.
- 彼女は電車の中といわず食事中といわず、スマホを見ている。かのじょはでんしゃのなかといわずしょくじちゅうといわず、すまほをみている。On the train, at the table: her eyes are always glued to her phone.
How to form it
Noun + といわず + noun + といわず. The two nouns form a natural pair: times (昼/夜, 平日/週末), parts of the body (顔/手, 手/足), places (中/外, 家/会社).
| Pair | Example | Overall meaning |
|---|---|---|
| times | 昼といわず夜といわず | at all hours |
| body parts | 顔といわず手といわず | all over the body |
| places | 家の中といわず外といわず | everywhere |
| days | 平日といわず週末といわず | every day |
- 工事の音は、朝といわず夜といわず続いている。こうじのおとは、あさといわずよるといわずつづいている。The noise of the building work goes on from morning till night.
といわず, といい, を問わず
〜といい〜といい (N1) cites two aspects to pass a judgement (味といい値段といい、申し分ない). 〜といわず〜といわず describes a fact that extends everywhere, without judgement.
〜を問わず (N2) is broader and more administrative: 年齢を問わず (regardless of age), 昼夜を問わず (day or night).
- この仕事は、年齢を問わず応募できる。このしごとは、ねんれいをとわずおうぼできる。This job is open to all, regardless of age.
- 色といい形といい、このかばんは気に入った。いろといいかたちといい、このかばんはきにいった。The colour and the shape alike: I love this bag.
Common mistakes
- Confusing it with 〜といい〜といい: といわず isn't for evaluating, but for saying “everywhere, all the time”.
- Choosing two unrelated nouns: you need a pair that evokes a whole (day / night, hands / feet).
- Translating it literally as “without saying”: here 言わず means “without distinguishing”.
