Both A and B: 〜といい〜といい

名詞 + といい + 名詞 + といい

Noun + といい + noun + といい: “both A and B, A and B alike”; two aspects cited to back up an overall judgement, whether praise or criticism.

In short

〜といい〜といい cites two aspects of the same thing to back up an overall judgement: 味といい値段といい、申し分ない (the taste and the price alike — it's perfect). The final judgement is an evaluation, either praise or criticism. Written register and careful speech.

  • この店は、味といい値段といい、申し分ない。このみせは、あじといいねだんといい、もうしぶんない。Whether it's the food or the prices, this restaurant is faultless.
  • 色といい形といい、このデザインは見事だ。いろといいかたちといい、このでざいんはみごとだ。The colour and the shape alike: this design is superb.
  • 彼は、話し方といい態度といい、社会人としての自覚が足りない。かれは、はなしかたといいたいどといい、しゃかいじんとしてのじかくがたりない。The way he talks, his attitude: he still hasn't grasped what's expected of a working adult.

The basics

といい comes from と言い (“if we're talking about”). By citing two specific points (A and B), you imply that everything else points the same way. English says “both A and B”, “A and B alike”, “what with A and B”.

The conclusion is an overall judgement: 申し分ない, 見事だ, 最高だ, or, on the contrary, 最悪だ, 自覚が足りない.

The taste and the price alike: nothing to complain about.

  • grammatical form
  • adjective
  • サービスといい雰囲気といい、最高のホテルだった。さーびすといいふんいきといい、さいこうのほてるだった。The service and the atmosphere alike: it was an outstanding hotel.
  • 天気といい客の入りといい、今年の祭りは散々だった。てんきといいきゃくのいりといい、ことしのまつりはさんざんだった。What with the weather and the turnout, this year's festival was a fiasco.

How to form it

Noun + といい + noun + といい, then a comma and the judgement. The two nouns belong to the same category: two qualities of an object, two aspects of a person.

Thing judgedA といい B といいJudgement
a restaurant味といい値段といい申し分ない
a person話し方といい態度といい失礼だ
a film音楽といい映像といいすばらしい
  • 音楽といい映像といい、この映画は本当にすばらしい。おんがくといいえいぞうといい、このえいがはほんとうにすばらしい。The music and the visuals alike: this film is truly magnificent.

といい〜といい, も〜も, といわず〜といわず

〜も〜も is neutral and can describe anything (味も値段もいい). 〜といい〜といい implies an emphatic evaluation.

〜といわず〜といわず (N1) describes a concrete state of affairs that extends everywhere, without distinction (昼といわず夜といわず働く). It's not for judging but for observing.

  • 彼は昼といわず夜といわず働いている。かれはひるといわずよるといわずはたらいている。He works day and night, without distinction.
  • この店は味も値段もいい。このみせはあじもねだんもいい。This restaurant is good and cheap. (neutral)

Common mistakes

  • Ending with a mere fact: “×味といい値段といい、この店は駅前にある” doesn't work; you need a judgement.
  • Listing three or more items: the expression cites two, which stand for the whole.
  • Confusing it with といわず: といい judges, といわず describes a state that extends everywhere.
