Only at, even for: 〜にして

Noun + にして

Noun + にして, a written construction: a stage reached (四十歳にして初めて), “even” (名人にしてなお), “both… and” (詩人にして画家) or “in” (一瞬にして). Distinguish it from にしては.

In short

〜にして is a written compound particle with several meanings: “only at this stage” (四十歳にして初めて), “even someone like” (名人にして失敗する), “both… and” (詩人にして画家) and “in, all at once” with a very short span of time (一瞬にして). Context decides. Written register, often solemn.

  • 彼は四十歳にして初めて海外へ出た。かれはよんじゅっさいにしてはじめてかいがいへでた。It was only at forty that he went abroad for the first time.
  • 長年積み上げてきた信用が、一瞬にして崩れ去った。ながねんつみあげてきたしんようが、いっしゅんにしてくずれさった。Trust built up over many years collapsed in an instant.
  • 彼女は医師にして作家でもある。かのじょはいしにしてさっかでもある。She is both a doctor and a writer.

The basics

にして is the old form of で (“being, as, in”). It has survived in writing with several nuances, all tied to the idea “it's by being A that”. It's used after a noun for an age, a length of time, a person or a status.

Rather than learning a single translation, remember the four uses and let the context (初めて, 一瞬, でもある, なお…) guide you.

The sentence, piece by piece
彼はhe (topic)
四十歳forty years old
にしてonly at this stage
初めてfor the first time
海外へ出たwent abroad

It was only at forty that he went abroad for the first time.

  • 九十歳にしてなお、彼は毎日筆をとっている。きゅうじゅっさいにしてなお、かれはまいにちふでをとっている。At ninety, he still takes up his pen every day.

Four uses, one pattern

The form doesn't change: noun + にして. It's the surrounding words that reveal the meaning.

UseClueExampleMeaning
Stage reached (late or early)初めて, ようやく, もう四十歳にして初めてonly at forty
Even someone likeなお, この〜だ, 〜ない名人にして失敗するeven a master fails
Both A and B〜でもある詩人にして画家poet and painter
Very short span一瞬, 一夜, 一日一瞬にしてin an instant
  • 名人にしてなお、この局面は難しいという。めいじんにしてなお、このきょくめんはむずかしいという。They say that even for a master, this position would still be tricky.
  • その歌手は一夜にしてスターになった。そのかしゅはいちやにしてすたーになった。That singer became a star overnight.

Fixed expressions to know

Several proverbs and set phrases keep にして: この親にしてこの子あり (like father, like son, often ironic), ローマは一日にして成らず (Rome wasn't built in a day), 一瞬にして, 一夜にして, 居ながらにして (without leaving home).

  • インターネットのおかげで、居ながらにして世界中の情報が手に入る。いんたーねっとのおかげで、いながらにしてせかいじゅうのじょうほうがてにはいる。Thanks to the internet, you can get information from all over the world without leaving your armchair.

にして, にしては, で, でも

The most dangerous confusion is with 〜にしては (N3): “for a…, it's surprising” (子どもにしては上手だ). With にして, there's no surprise relative to a norm, but a stage, an identity or a span of time.

〜で is the neutral, spoken version (四十歳で結婚した); 〜でも says “even” without solemnity; 〜であり links two qualities more flatly than 〜にして.

SentenceMeaning
十歳にしてプロになったhe turned pro at just ten (a remarkable stage)
十歳にしては上手だfor a ten-year-old, he plays well (surprise)
十歳でプロになったhe turned pro at ten (neutral)
  • 子どもにしては、ずいぶん難しい言葉を知っている。こどもにしては、ずいぶんむずかしいことばをしっている。For a child, he knows some pretty difficult words. (にしては, a different meaning)

Common mistakes

  • Confusing にして and にしては: a single は changes everything (a stage reached versus a gap from a norm).
  • Looking for a single translation: “at”, “even”, “both… and”, “in”, depending on context.
  • Using it in everyday speech (“三十歳にして結婚したよ”): it sounds solemn; in speech, say 三十歳で.
