If you ask why, it's that: 〜かというと・〜かといえば
Question word + 〜か + というと ; plain form + かというと(、そうではない)
Question word + 〜かというと: announcing an explanation (〜からだ). Plain form + かというと: asking a question in order to refute it (そうではない). A presentation construction, spoken and written.
In short
〜かというと has two uses. After a question word (なぜ, どうして, 何), it announces an explanation: “if you're wondering why…, it's because…”. After a statement, it questions it in order to contradict it: “does that mean…? Not at all”. It's a construction for presenting and reasoning, in speech and writing.
- なぜ遅れたかというと、事故で電車が止まったからだ。なぜおくれたかというと、じこででんしゃがとまったからだ。The reason I was late is that the train stopped because of an accident.
- 安ければ売れるかというと、そうではない。やすければうれるかというと、そうではない。Being cheap doesn't mean it'll sell.
- 名古屋は退屈な町かというと、まったくそんなことはない。なごやはたいくつなまちかというと、まったくそんなことはない。Is Nagoya a boring city? Not in the slightest.
The basics
You ask yourself a question (〜か), then answer it (というと: “if one says…”). It's a presentation technique: you anticipate the listener's question in order to deal with it.
First use, with a question word: the question announces an explanation, ending in からだ, のだ or ためだ. Second use, without a question word: the question picks up a received idea in order to take it apart (そうではない, そうとは限らない).
The reason I was late is that the train stopped because of an accident.

- どうしてこの仕事を選んだかというと、子どものころからの夢だったからです。どうしてこのしごとをえらんだかというと、こどものころからのゆめだったからです。The reason I chose this job is that it's been my dream since I was a child.
How to form it
Plain form + か + というと (or かといえば, a little more written). With a な-adjective or a noun, drop だ before か: 上手かというと, 学生かというと.
| Use | Form | Typical follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Explaining | なぜ/どうして/何 〜かというと | 〜からだ/〜のだ/〜ためだ |
| Contradicting | plain form + かというと | そうではない/そうとは限らない |
| な-adj, noun | 上手かというと (without だ) | まだまだだ |
- 日本語が上手かというと、まだまだです。にほんごがじょうずかというと、まだまだです。Do I speak Japanese well? I still have a long way to go.
- お金があれば幸せかといえば、そうとは限らない。おかねがあればしあわせかといえば、そうとはかぎらない。Does money bring happiness? Not necessarily.
Taking apart a received idea
In the second use, the sentence often takes the form “if A, then B?”: 安ければ売れるかというと…, 日本人ならだれでも敬語が上手かというと…. The expected answer is negative; you qualify it with 必ずしも〜ない (“not necessarily”) or そうとも限らない.
- 日本人ならだれでも敬語が上手かというと、そうとも限らない。にほんじんならだれでもけいごがじょうずかというと、そうともかぎらない。Are all Japanese people good at keigo? Not necessarily.
かというと, からといって, というと
からといって (N3) says “just because A doesn't mean B”: 高いからといって、いいとは限らない. The meaning is close to the second use, but かというと stages the question, as in a presentation. As for というと without か (the “speaking of” point), it picks up a topic without asking a question: 名古屋というと、みそかつだ.
| Construction | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜かというと、そうではない | does that mean…? no | 安ければ売れるかというと |
| 〜からといって〜とは限らない | just because… doesn't mean | 高いからといっていいとは限らない |
| N というと | speaking of N | 名古屋というとみそかつ |
- 高いからといって、品質がいいとは限らない。たかいからといって、ひんしつがいいとはかぎらない。Just because something's expensive doesn't mean it's good quality. (からといって)
Common mistakes
- In the “contradicting” use, forgetting the negative answer (そうではない, そうとは限らない): without it, the sentence is left hanging.
- In the “explaining” use, forgetting からだ or のだ at the end: the question calls for a reason.
- Putting だ before か (×上手だかというと): with a な-adjective or a noun, it's 上手かというと.
