If you're still at the stage of: 〜ようでは

plain form (な-adj な/N の) + ようでは

Plain form + ようでは: “if you're at the stage of…”, criticising a situation, followed by a negative consequence (無理だ, 困る, 失格だ). A tone of reproach or stern advice.

In short

〜ようでは criticises a present situation and announces its unfortunate consequence: “if you're (still) at the stage of…, then…”. The first part describes a behaviour or state judged inadequate, the second a negative result (無理だ, 困る, だめだ, 〜ない). It's the tone of stern advice: a teacher, a coach, a boss, a parent.

  • こんな簡単な問題がわからないようでは、合格は難しい。こんなかんたんなもんだいがわからないようでは、ごうかくはむずかしい。If you can't even understand a question this simple, passing will be hard.
  • 毎朝遅刻するようでは、社会人として失格だ。まいあさちこくするようでは、しゃかいじんとしてしっかくだ。Turning up late every morning is no way for a working adult to behave.
  • この程度の練習で疲れるようでは、試合には出られないよ。このていどのれんしゅうでつかれるようでは、しあいにはでられないよ。If a training session like this wears you out, you won't be able to play in matches.

The basics

よう (“the look, the state”) + では (“if that's how it is”). You look at a situation and say: “if it's like this, it won't work”. The speaker passes judgement, often from above: the first part describes a failing (lateness, a mistake, a weakness), the second the inevitable consequence.

The second part is always negative: impossibility (無理だ, 〜られない), worry (心配だ), condemnation (失格だ, だめだ), or the fixed expression 先が思いやられる (“the future looks bleak”).

How to form it

Plain form of the verb (often negative) or the い-adjective, な-adjective + な, noun + の. In speech, では becomes じゃ: ようじゃ.

BaseFormExample
Verb〜る/〜ない + ようでは遅刻するようでは、わからないようでは
い-adj〜い + ようではこんなに寒いようでは
な-adj〜な + ようではそんなに不注意なようでは
NounN の + ようではこの成績のようでは
Spoken〜ようじゃ泣くようじゃ
  • そんなに不注意なようでは、運転は任せられない。そんなにふちゅういなようでは、うんてんはまかせられない。If you're this careless, I can't let you drive.
  • こんなことで泣くようじゃ、この先やっていけないよ。こんなことでなくようじゃ、このさきやっていけないよ。If you cry over something like this, you won't cope with what's ahead. (spoken)

ようでは, ては, ないことには, ようなら

ては (N4) sets out a general condition followed by an unfortunate result: 雨が降っては困る. ようでは adds a judgement about an observed state of affairs: it's not a hypothesis, it's a criticism of what you can see. ないことには (N2) says something else: a necessary condition, “until you've done X, you can't…”.

Don't confuse it with ようなら (“if it turns out that…”) either, which is neutral and carries no reproach: 熱が下がらないようなら、病院に行ってください.

ConstructionIdeaExample
〜ようではif it's come to this, it's bad (criticism)遅刻するようでは失格だ
〜てはif…, it's a problem雨が降っては困る
〜ないことにはuntil… not, impossible見ないことには分からない
〜ようならif it turns out that…下がらないようなら病院へ
  • 熱が下がらないようなら、病院に行ってください。ねつがさがらないようなら、びょういんにいってください。If the fever doesn't come down, go to hospital. (ようなら: neutral)
  • 実際に見ないことには、何とも言えない。じっさいにみないことには、なんともいえない。Until I've seen it with my own eyes, I can't say anything. (ないことには)

Common mistakes

  • Giving it a positive follow-up (×練習しないようでは、上手になる): ようでは always announces an unfortunate result.
  • Confusing it with ようだ (“it seems that”): 遅れるようだ = “it looks like he'll be late”; 遅れるようでは = “if he's at the stage of being late”.
  • Forgetting な or の: 不注意なようでは, この成績のようでは.
