As long as, unless: 〜限り・〜ない限り
Verb / Adj / N である + 限り ; Verb-ない + 限り
Verb / Adj / N である + 限り: as long as; Verb-ない + 限り: unless. Also 私の知る限り (as far as I know) and できる限り (as much as possible).
In short
〜限り (かぎり) sets a limit: as long as the condition holds, what follows stays true (生きている限り: as long as I live). In the negative, 〜ない限り means “unless” (雨が降らない限り: unless it rains). It also delimits knowledge or ability: 私の知る限り (as far as I know), できる限り (as much as possible). Neutral to written register.
- 生きている限り、このご恩は忘れません。いきているかぎり、このごおんはわすれません。As long as I live, I'll never forget what you did for me.
- 雨が降らない限り、試合は予定どおり行います。あめがふらないかぎり、しあいはよていどおりおこないます。Unless it rains, the match will go ahead as planned.
- 私の知る限り、彼はうそをついたことがない。わたしのしるかぎり、かれはうそをついたことがない。As far as I know, he's never told a lie.
- できる限り早くお返事します。できるかぎりはやくおへんじします。I'll reply as soon as I possibly can.
The basics
限り is “the limit”. 〜限り draws a boundary: inside that limit, what follows stays true. In the affirmative, it's “as long as” (生きている限り: for as long as I live). In the negative, it's “unless” (練習しない限り: unless you practise, you won't improve).
The second part often expresses strong will, a promise or a categorical conclusion: 忘れません, 続けたい, 上手にはならない.
Unless it rains, the match will go ahead as planned.
- noun
- verb
- grammatical form
- 君が謝らない限り、彼は許してくれないだろう。きみがあやまらないかぎり、かれはゆるしてくれないだろう。Unless you apologise, he probably won't forgive you.
- 健康である限り、山登りを続けたい。けんこうであるかぎり、やまのぼりをつづけたい。As long as I'm healthy, I want to keep climbing mountains.
How to form it
After a verb or an adjective, add 限り directly. After a noun or a な-adjective, go through である (学生である限り). With verbs of knowing or perceiving (知る, 見る, 聞く), 限り delimits what you know: 私の知る限り, 見た限りでは. できる限り (“as much as possible”) is a fixed expression.
| Use | Construction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| as long as | Verb / Adj / N である + 限り | ここにいる限り安全だ |
| unless | Verb-ない + 限り | 努力しない限り成功しない |
| limit of knowledge | 知る/見る/聞く + 限り | 私の知る限り |
| as much as possible | できる限り | できる限り手伝う |
- 学生である限り、学校の規則は守らなければならない。がくせいであるかぎり、がっこうのきそくはまもらなければならない。As long as you're a pupil, you have to follow the school rules.
- 見た限りでは、特に問題はなさそうだ。みたかぎりでは、とくにもんだいはなさそうだ。From what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be any particular problem.
限り, うちは, 以上
うちは stresses a period that will end sooner or later: 若いうちは (while you're young — and you won't stay young). 限り puts the focus on the condition itself: as long as it holds, nothing changes.
以上(は)(line 5) starts from an established fact and draws an obligation from it: 約束した以上, “now that I've promised”. 限り, on the other hand, remains an open condition: “as long as…”.
| Expression | Idea | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 限り | as long as the condition holds | ここにいる限り安全だ |
| うちは | while a period lasts (it will end) | 若いうちは何でもできる |
| 以上(は) | now that, it's an established fact | 約束した以上、守る |
- 若いうちは、少しぐらい無理をしても平気だ。わかいうちは、すこしぐらいむりをしてもへいきだ。While you're young, pushing yourself a bit is no problem.
- 約束した以上、最後までやるつもりだ。やくそくしたいじょう、さいごまでやるつもりだ。Now that I've promised, I intend to see it through.
Don't confuse it with に限らず and に限って
With に in front, the meaning changes completely. に限らず (N3) means “not only”: 子どもに限らず大人も. に限って (line 11) means “of all times, just when”: 急いでいる時に限って. 限り, without に, is a condition.
- この公園は、子どもに限らず大人にも人気がある。このこうえんは、こどもにかぎらずおとなにもにんきがある。This park is popular not only with children, but with adults too.
- 急いでいる時に限って、電車が遅れる。いそいでいるときにかぎって、でんしゃがおくれる。It's always when I'm in a hurry that the train is late.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up 限り (as long as), に限らず (not only) and に限って (just when): the に changes everything.
- Attaching 限り straight to a noun: you need 学生である限り, not “学生限り”.
- Translating ない限り word for word as “as long as… not”: in English, “unless” is usually far more natural.
