Prompted by, as a result of: 〜をきっかけに・〜を契機に

N / Verb-た + の + をきっかけに(して)/をきっかけとして/を契機に

N / Verb-た の + をきっかけに: an event triggers a change or a new beginning. Formal versions: を契機に, を機に. In speech: 〜がきっかけで.

In short

〜をきっかけに presents an event as the trigger for a change: “prompted by, as a result of, that's what got me to”. Often a life event (a trip, a meeting, an illness, a transfer) that makes you start, stop or discover something. を契機に (けいき) is its formal, written version, and を機に (き) a terse, elevated equivalent.

  • 日本への留学をきっかけに、茶道を習い始めた。にほんへのりゅうがくをきっかけに、さどうをならいはじめた。Studying in Japan gave me the chance to take up the tea ceremony.
  • 病気になったのをきっかけに、たばこをやめた。びょうきになったのをきっかけに、たばこをやめた。It was falling ill that made me quit smoking.
  • 名古屋への転勤をきっかけにして、車の運転を始めた。なごやへのてんきんをきっかけにして、くるまのうんてんをはじめた。Being transferred to Nagoya got me to start driving.
  • オリンピックを契機に、多くの施設が新しく作られた。おりんぴっくをけいきに、おおくのしせつがあたらしくつくられた。The Olympics prompted the construction of many new facilities.

The basics

きっかけ is “the trigger, the opportunity that sets things going”. 〜をきっかけに says an event served as the starting point for a change: you started, stopped or discovered something because of it, or thanks to it. The event isn't necessarily the underlying cause: it's the spark.

So what follows expresses a beginning or a change: 始める, やめる, 〜ようになる, 変わる. It's a very common turn of phrase when you tell your own story (“why did you start learning Japanese?”).

The sentence, piece by piece
病気になったのをhaving fallen ill (object)
きっかけにas a trigger
たばこをcigarettes (object)
やめたI quit

It was falling ill that made me quit smoking.

  • 一冊の本との出会いがきっかけで、作家を目指すようになった。いっさつのほんとのであいがきっかけで、さっかをめざすようになった。It was coming across one particular book that made me want to become a writer.

How to form it

After a verb, you need to turn it into a noun with の (or こと): 会ったのをきっかけに. With が, you get 〜がきっかけで, very common in speech. を契機に and を機に are polished versions, for articles, speeches and reports. 契機 is read けいき.

をきっかけに, から, せいで

から (N5) gives a direct cause: 病気だから休む. をきっかけに tells of the start of a new phase, often in a life story, and what follows is a lasting change.

To complain about a negative cause, you say のせいで: “雨をきっかけに遅刻した” is odd, because the rain didn't “trigger” anything new in your life; it just made you late.

ExpressionIdeaExample
から/のでdirect cause雨だから行かない
せいでnegative cause, blame雨のせいで遅れた
をきっかけにtrigger for a change or a beginning旅行をきっかけに写真を始めた
  • 寝坊したせいで、電車に乗り遅れた。ねぼうしたせいで、でんしゃにのりおくれた。I missed the train because I overslept.
  • 旅行をきっかけに、写真を撮るのが趣味になった。りょこうをきっかけに、しゃしんをとるのがしゅみになった。That trip got me into photography.

Common mistakes

  • Using it for a cause you're complaining about: “雨をきっかけに遅刻した” is wrong; you say 雨のせいで遅刻した.
  • Forgetting の after a verb: you say 会ったのをきっかけに, not “会ったをきっかけに”.
  • Mixing up 契機 (けいき, opportunity) and 景気 (けいき, the economy): same reading, different meaning.
