Version française

In, in the field of: 〜において・〜における

N + において/においては/においても/における + N

N + において (before a noun: における): the written version of で for the place, period or field of a fact. Very written register: speeches, articles, official documents.

In short

〜において is the written, official version of で: it indicates the place, period, situation or field in which something happens (“at, in, in the field of”). Before a noun, you use における: 現代社会における問題 (“the problems of contemporary society”). You find it in speeches, articles, official programmes and reports.

  • 会議は第一会議室において行われる。かいぎはだいいちかいぎしつにおいておこなわれる。The meeting will be held in Conference Room 1.
  • 現代社会における最大の問題は何だろうか。げんだいしゃかいにおけるさいだいのもんだいはなんだろうか。What is the greatest problem in contemporary society?
  • 江戸時代において、名古屋は尾張藩の城下町として栄えた。えどじだいにおいて、なごやはおわりはんのじょうかまちとしてさかえた。In the Edo period, Nagoya flourished as the castle town of the Owari domain.
  • 彼は医学の分野において、大きな成果を上げた。かれはいがくのぶんやにおいて、おおきなせいかをあげた。He achieved remarkable results in the field of medicine.

The basics

において sets the frame for something: a place (会議室において), a period (江戸時代において), a situation or a field (医学の分野において). It plays exactly the role of で, but in a written, official register. The expression is written in hiragana.

における is the form that describes a noun: 現代社会における問題, “the problems (arising) in contemporary society”. It's one of the most frequent turns of phrase in the titles of articles, theses and reports.

How to form it

において goes before a verb (行う, 発表する, 活躍する…), における before a noun. With は and も, you get においては (“as far as this frame goes”) and においても (“in this frame too”). Before a noun, においての exists, but における is the standard form.

において, で, について

で (N5) is the everyday version: 会議室で話す. において says the same thing in a speech, a programme, an article. In casual speech, “家において晩ご飯を食べた” sounds like a police report.

について and に関して (N3) introduce a topic: you talk, write or ask a question “about” something. において places a fact “in” a frame. You write a report 日本の文化について, and you note a change 日本の文化において.

ExpressionRoleExample
でplace, frame (neutral)会議室で話す
においてplace, period, field (written)会議室において協議する
についてtopic being discussed環境問題について話す
における + N“in” before a noun日本における環境問題
  • 昨日、友だちの家で晩ご飯を食べた。きのう、ともだちのいえでばんごはんをたべた。Yesterday I had dinner at a friend's place. (spoken: で)
  • 環境問題について、クラスで話し合った。かんきょうもんだいについて、くらすではなしあった。We discussed environmental issues in class. (topic: について)

Common mistakes

  • Using it in casual speech: “駅において待ってる” is ridiculous. Among friends, で is enough.
  • Putting において before a noun: you say 日本における問題, not “日本において問題”.
  • Using it for a topic of discussion: you write a report 文化について, not “文化において”.
