Starting with, just from: 〜からして
N + からして
N + からして: “just from…, starting with…”. You judge the whole from the most obvious element; often a critical tone.
In short
〜からして takes the most obvious element, the first thing you notice, to judge the whole: “just from…, starting with…, to begin with…”. If even X is like that, the rest must be too. The tone is often critical, but not always. A second use: a basis for judgement (“given…”).
- この映画は、タイトルからしておもしろそうだ。このえいがは、たいとるからしておもしろそうだ。Just from the title, this film looks interesting.
- 課長からして遅刻するのだから、部下が時間を守るはずがない。かちょうからしてちこくするのだから、ぶかがじかんをまもるはずがない。When the section chief himself turns up late, his staff are hardly going to be punctual.
- あの話し方からして、彼は名古屋の人だろう。あのはなしかたからして、かれはなごやのひとだろう。Judging by the way he talks, he must be from Nagoya.
The basics
からして starts from an element seen as representative, often the most visible one (the title, the entrance, the boss, the name), to draw a conclusion about the whole. The idea is “if even that is like this, then the rest…”.
When it's about a person, からして often means “even them, who should set an example”: the tone becomes critical.
Just from the title, this film looks interesting.
- noun
- grammatical form
- adjective
- この工場は、入り口からしてきれいだ。このこうじょうは、いりぐちからしてきれいだ。This factory is spotless, starting with the entrance.
How to form it
からして goes right after a noun. What follows draws the conclusion, often with 〜のだから, はずがない, そうだ, だろう. No special conjugation.
| Use | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Most obvious example | 名前からして強そうだ | just from the name |
| Even the role model | 先生からして遅刻する | even the teacher |
| Basis for judgement | あの話し方からして | judging by the way he talks |
- 先生からしてルールを守らないのだから、学生が守るわけがない。せんせいからしてるーるをまもらないのだから、がくせいがまもるわけがない。If even the teacher doesn't follow the rules, the students certainly won't.
- においからして、この牛乳はもう古い。においからして、このぎゅうにゅうはもうふるい。Just from the smell, this milk has gone off.
Compare: からすると, さえ
からすると (N2) gives a point of view or a clue, without the idea of “the first example”. からして stresses that the element mentioned is the most obvious one, or the one who should be exemplary. さえ (N3) cites an extreme, unexpected case (“even a child knows that”); からして cites the first, most visible one.
| Sentence | Nuance |
|---|---|
| 専門家からすると、問題が多い | from the experts' point of view |
| 社長からしてやる気がない | even the CEO, the first person concerned |
| 子どもでさえ知っている | even a child (extreme case) |
- そんなこと、子どもでさえ知っている。そんなこと、こどもでさえしっている。Even a child knows that.
- この数字からすると、来年は売り上げが伸びそうだ。このすうじからすると、らいねんはうりあげがのびそうだ。Going by these figures, sales should grow next year.
Common mistakes
- Translating it as “from” in time or space: からして has nothing temporal or spatial about it (“×東京からして大阪まで”).
- Using it for a simple starting point or a neutral point of view: that's the job of からすると.
- Forgetting the tone: applied to a person, からして is often a reproach.
